Luis Enrique’s future on the Paris Saint-Germain bench could be defined by two games in January. The French side are in 25th place in the league table and face Manchester City and Stuttgart in two decisive Champions League matches.

The objective for the French side is to secure a place in the playoffs (a top 24 placing) with a premature elimination in the top European competition having major repercussions at the Parisian outfit. Despite president Al Khelaïfi claiming that he is ‘delighted’ with the Spaniard’s work at the club, few believe his claims that not progressing in the Champions League would not impact on the Asturian’s future in Paris.

Contract extension

PSG had planned to announce Luis Enrique’s 2027 contract extension after the match against Atlético Madrid on 6 November but the home defeat against the colchoneros, decided to postpone the announcement.

Luis Enrique’s PSG are unstoppable in the French league, where they have a ten-point lead over the second-placed team, and they also secured their passage to the next round of the French Cup after beating Lens on penalties, but in Europe, his PSG side have struggled in a competition that is still the number one priority for their Qatari owners.

Averting a UCL disaster

Despite the claims from the top echelons of the club that they are not considering parting ways with Luis Enrique if they are eliminated early in the Champions League group stage, most would agree that failing to progress in the new format is not just a simple failure given the club’s resources, but a complete debacle.

The final two weeks of January will go someway in shaping Luis Enrique’s future as they welcome City to Paris on the 22nd before winding down their campaign a week later at and Stuttgart.
