Rafael Márquez already facing unexpected problem as Mexico coach

Mexico’s World Cup elimination has ushered in a new era for the national team. Javier Aguirre’s third stint as head coach has come to an end, with longtime assistant Rafael Márquez set to take over the program. The legendary former defender is expected to lead a project that runs through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

However, before officially taking charge, Márquez is already facing an unexpected challenge: assembling his coaching staff.

Who are the candidates to be on Márquez’s staff?

According to TUDN reporter Gibrán Araige, Mexico’s incoming head coach has not yet finalized the staff that will accompany him into the next World Cup cycle. Márquez is expected to return to Mexico this week following a vacation after the World Cup, but several of the candidates he had in mind are no longer considered certain to join him.

Araige reports that Andrés Guardado, who had been expected to serve as Márquez’s assistant coach, has not confirmed whether he will be part of the project.

Former Mexico goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera is also no longer viewed as a lock to join the staff. The former Toluca star had been lined up as goalkeeping coach, but there has been no confirmation regarding his arrival. Meanwhile, Bernardo Cueva, who currently works with Chelsea in the English Premier League, remains one of the leading candidates to join Márquez’s staff.

When will Márquez be unveiled by the FMF?

According to TUDN, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) plans to officially introduce Márquez as Mexico’s new head coach between Aug. 10 and Aug. 15.

That makes completing his coaching staff the immediate priority as he begins preparing for the next phase of Mexico’s national team project.

When will Márquez take charge of Mexico for the first time?

The urgency is heightened by the fact that Mexico already has several friendly matches scheduled.

Márquez is expected to make his debut as Mexico head coach on Sept. 25 against Colombia. El Tri will then face Peru on Sept. 29 before wrapping up its first set of friendlies under Márquez against Chile at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Oct. 6.
