Ramos: “I doubted if I did the right thing when I left Real Madrid”
Sergio Ramos was honest in reflecting on his departure from Real Madrid and confesses that adapting to PSG last year was difficult.
Sergio Ramos spoke to UEFA ahead of the Champions League Round of 16 match against Bayern Munich and was honest in his reflections upon leaving Real Madrid in the summer of 2021: “Obviously, leaving Madrid was a very big change. My goal is always to keep winning. I won a lot with Real Madrid, but I thought it was a good opportunity for a change of scenery. Everything was very difficult at first. You have to find a home and settle down, especially when you come with a family, with four children. The process was a bit difficult initially but it all worked out.”
The Spaniard admits that last year things did not go as well as he had hoped and he even doubted whether he did the right thing when he left the side from the Spanish capital: “At first, having made that leap, everything went wrong. I got injured, it took me a long time to recover and adapt to the new system, the new team and the new coach. You start to doubt if you have done the right thing or not. But my career has been defined by perseverance and hard work. You keep fighting and hope that this will make things more meaningful in the future.” But now he admits that he is in a good moment and happy at PSG: “What I can say is that I am where I want to be and in a club with such a desire to win the Champions League. And I want to make the most of what’s left of my playing career.”
PSG are having a sticky patch and the player from Camas (Sevilla) clarifies where the key is to ensure that the season ends in success: “There are many stars here, some of the best players in the world. Winning is coming together and everyone looking at the same goal. If a team ends up winning it’s because they left behind their personal egos to one side. That is more important than any stars we may have.”
Ramos assures that the tie against Bayern will be key to defining the future of the Parisian club this season: “Beating Bayern would be a very positive message to send to the world. To win the Champions League you have to beat the best and Bayern are among them every year.
The Spanish player also had time to talk about his future when he retires from the game: “I spend a lot of time in football, and I haven’t had time for the family. So when I retire I plan to spend two years raising my children, experiencing everyday things that are sometimes not compatible with football. I see myself being possibly a club president, sports director or coach” concluded the PSG centre-back.
