Rangel’s record a concern for Mexico running up to the World Cup
The Chivas goalkeeper has conceded 10 goals in his starting appearances for Mexico.

As Mexico gears up for the 2026 World Cup, one name drawing attention in the goalkeeper conversation is Raúl ‘Tala’ Rangel.
Though he’s already had a taste of starting for the national team, his brief track record is raising eyebrows: just four appearances, and a staggering 10 goals conceded.

Rangel’s rocky start on the international stage
Rangel’s senior debut came on June 6, 2024, in a friendly against Uruguay—a match that ended in a brutal 4-0 loss for El Tri. Playing the full 90 minutes, Rangel struggled under pressure, with defensive missteps contributing to the rout.
His second outing wasn’t much better. Facing Switzerland, Rangel again let in four goals. Mexico managed to score twice, softening the blow, but the damage to Rangel’s reputation lingered. Two matches, eight goals conceded—it was a tough pill to swallow for fans and analysts alike.

A glimmer of redemption in the US
In his third match, against South Korea, Rangel conceded two goals that nearly cost Mexico the game. But a moment of brilliance from striker Santiago Giménez salvaged a 2-2 draw. The match, held in the United States as part of Mexico’s World Cup prep, offered a glimpse of resilience—but also underscored Rangel’s vulnerability under pressure.
Rangel’s fourth and most promising performance came against New Zealand. This time, he held firm between the posts, helping Mexico secure a 3-0 victory. It was a much-needed confidence boost and a reminder of his potential when things click.
Despite the shaky start, Rangel remains in contention for a World Cup roster spot. His raw talent is evident, but consistency will be key. With time ticking down to the tournament, the question remains: can ‘Tala’ rise to the occasion and become the reliable anchor Mexico needs in goal?
