Raphaël Varane’s World Cup up in the air
France begin their World Cup campaign on November 22, when they face Australia in Group D.
Manchester United defender Raphaël Varane left the pitch in tears during his side’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Saturday.
The centre-back was forced off before the hour mark of the match at Stamford Bridge and it remains unclear whether this will rule him out of the 2022 World Cup next month.
France begin their World Cup campaign on November 22, when they face Australia in Group D. France boss Didier Deschamp will announce the French squad for the World Cup on November 9.
Kanté to miss World Cup for France
Deschamp has already had to deal with several blows in his squad, with midfielder N’Golo Kanté ruled out of the tournament in Qatar through injury. There are also doubts over the fitness of Paul Pogba, who is currently out with a knee injury.
United manager Erik ten Hag consoled the 29-year-old after he left the pitch. After the game, Ten Hag said: “It is difficult to say how it is now because it is so soon after the game. We have to wait 24 hours and then we will know what it is.”
Varane, who has 87 senior France caps, was part of the Les Bleus side which won the 2018 World Cup in Russia and also helped his country win the Nations League in 2020-21.
