Raphinha’s injury has once again put the spotlight on Marcus Rashford, who now has a golden opportunity to make his case and secure his place at Barcelona next season. With the Brazilian sidelined, the left wing is effectively up for grabs, and the natural replacement is the English forward. So far this season, he has mainly featured when Raphinha has been unavailable and has never been an undisputed starter. If he can step up now, with a run of starts likely ahead, he could go a long way toward ensuring he remains in blaugrana next year.

Hansi Flick has consistently described himself as an admirer of Rashford’s game, which is precisely why he demands more from him. “He still has a lot of potential to show. We always look at goals and final passes, but he can give more,” the German coach has said on multiple occasions. What Flick wants is greater defensive intensity, better tactical awareness, and more consistency. To date, Rashford has been more of an impact player, while Flick is looking for a steadier, more complete contribution, especially off the ball.

Rashford’s big chance at Barcelona

The English forward’s season has been solid overall, though slightly inconsistent. He has reached double figures, posting 10 goals and 13 assists in 39 appearances across four competitions (LaLiga, Champions League, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup). Those numbers may not be spectacular, but they are far from poor. Recently, however, Flick appeared to lose some trust in him, limiting him to just 28 minutes across the last four matches. Still, it is worth noting that breaking into the lineup was nearly impossible given Raphinha’s form.

FC Barcelona view his season positively and are close to making a decision on his future. However, president Joan Laporta has hinted at renegotiating with Manchester United over a potential deal. The idea would be to extend his loan by another season while paying only a portion of the €30 million purchase option. That approach suggests there is still some uncertainty about committing fully to the transfer.

This stretch of the season will serve as Rashford’s final exam. His performances will be closely scrutinized by club executives, Flick, and especially Deco, who, as sporting director, will ultimately decide his future. For the Englishman, every game now carries the weight of a final. The decisive phase belongs to him.
