Raúl on Union Berlin’s radar
German media outlets claim that the former Real Madrid captain and current RM Castilla coach is one of the candidates to take over the Union Berlin bench after Fischer’s dismissal.
Union Berlin are searching for a new head coach after the recent dismissal of Urs Fischer and one of the club’s main candidates appears to be Raúl Gonzalez Blanco. German newspaper Bild reveals that the former Real Madrid star would be a popular addition to the Berlin based club who, despite being in the group stage of the Champions League are struggling domestically currently propping up the Bundesliga table. “It would be a bombshell”, claim Bild.
Raúl is not the only coach that Union are closely looking at with Alfred Schreuder, formerly of Hoffenheim and Koeman’s number two during his time at FC Barcelona, is also very popular with the Union Berlin sports management given his Bundesliga coaching experience. Oliver Glasner, formerly of Eintracht Frankfurt, would be the third option when it comes to filling the place left by Fischer after the Swiss completed five years with the Berliners taking the side into the top flight and Champions League for the first time ever in the club’s history.
This would not be the fist German overture for Raúl’s coaching services with his former club Schalke knocking on his door with the Spaniard event eventually turning down the proposal.
Until a new permanent coach is secured, Union Berlin will be looked after by Marco Grote and Marie-Louise Eta with the pair set to be in charge on Saturday against Augsburg with Eta set to make history by becoming the first woman to sit on a Bundesliga bench.
