Rayados and Sergio Ramos poised to set historic record

Rayados de Monterrey are riding high in Mexico’s Apertura 2025 tournament, and veteran defender Sergio Ramos is right in the thick of it. With 18 points through seven matches, the club sits atop the Liga MX standings, boasting six straight wins and eyeing a record that’s been untouched for decades.

Rayados aiming for the record books

This marks just the fourth time in Monterrey’s history that they’ve strung together six consecutive victories in league play. But they’re not stopping there. The team is now just two wins away from tying the club’s all-time record of eight straight wins, set back in the 1963–64 season—more than 60 years ago.

To match that milestone, Rayados must defeat Querétaro and América in their upcoming fixtures. But even a win over Querétaro alone would be enough to tie the record for most consecutive wins in a short-format tournament.

Recent history and Ramos’ absence

Since Mexico adopted the split-season format, Monterrey has only once reached six straight wins—during the Clausura 2023 under coach Víctor Manuel Vucetich. That run extended to seven before being snapped.

However, they’ll face a challenge in their next outing. Sergio Ramos will be sidelined due to yellow card accumulation and is set to serve his suspension this Saturday, September 14, when Monterrey travels to face Querétaro.

With momentum on their side and a break in play due to the FIFA international window, the squad was granted a week off. They returned to training on Saturday, September 6, refreshed and ready to chase history.
