Rayados rack up more air miles in the Leagues Cup
Monterrey beat LAFC and will face Nashville in the semi-finals but face more travelling.
Monterrey has fought Mexican soccer’s corner in the Leagues Cup. The royal club is the only Liga MX team left in the international tournament and needs just two more victories to be crowned champions on American soil.
Club president Antonio Noriega has spoke out about the organization of the Leagues Cup and in particular, his unhappiness with the scheduling, tiring long trips and the advantages that MLS clubs have enjoyed. Monterrey feel as though they have spent the past month travelling and will once again be boarding a plane, this time to face Nashville in the semi-finals - the latest in a long line of seemingly endless road trips.
American dream has become a nightmare
So far, Rayados have covered a total of 9,336 kilometers during their Leagues Cup campaign. Fernando Ortíz and his players have spent more in airports and on planes than in one city in order to comply with their obligations in the tournament.
In fact, their most recent rivals, LAFC, did not leave Los Angeles at any time and at one point, it looked like that they could take advantage of having a home advantage to eliminate a Rayados side which is now tired, weary of lugging suitcases, packing passports and long-distance flights. Monterrey will have to sort out their travel itinerary and get ready to board another plane to Nashville - a trip which will add another 2,889 kilometers to the team’s already loaded journey.
