Real Madrid already have a new ‘9′ in La Fábrica

Juvenil, the youth team, is heading for the treble thanks in large part to the 33 goals from its pichichi, 19-year-old Gonzalo García.

Every once in a while, a Real Madrid player emerges from La Fábrica who just can’t help but score goals at the lower level. This is the case of 19-year-old Gonzalo García Torre, a Madrid-born winger-turned-striker. His numbers in Valdebebas are overwhelming, his latest goal against Atlético in the more-than-tense mini-derby last Sunday (making it 2-2) in the quarterfinals of the Champions Cup, taking his season’s tally to 33 goals across all competitions.

Update: Real Madrid win Champions Cup

Gonzalo García, a striking option for Madrid

The recent scoring prowess of the youngster is not something that has surprised those that have been following him. Counting all his seasons in the youth ranks, where he arrived as a junior in 2014, he has accumulated 117 goals as a Real Madrid player. There could have been many more, but in the 2018-19 season he played for Mallorca as his family moved there. He returned the following year and since then has been unstoppable.

In fact, there haven’t been so many goals for a player in Madrid’s Juvenil A team since the 42 claimed by Borja Mayoral in the 2014-15 season. In fact, Gonzalo has scored 13 more goals in the División de Honor Juvenil than the top scorer from the previous year, Bruno Iglesias (14). This has been the leap experienced by coach Álvaro Arbeloa, who in addition to major talents such as Nico Paz (Argentine Under-20 international and with a future seen in the first team) and a national pearl like Manuel Ángel, has a guy up front who seemingly can’t be touched.

And there’s more, because Gonzalo still has at least one more game in which to add to the total. The Under-19 international will play in the semifinals of the Champions Cup against Las Palmas. If they win that, they will play the final on Saturday in their search for the treble after winning the Copa del Rey and the league.
