Brahim - who was excellent on the night - opened the scoring after 20 minutes and Madrid had other opportunities to double their lead but could not get past Jan Oblak.
The red and white side of the capital will be delighted with Marcos Llorente's 93rd-minute equaliser as Atlético claim a late point in the derby.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, are now two points clear of Girona in second place and the two sides meet in a top-of-the-table clash at the Bernabeú on Saturday.
Barcelona are in third place, while Atlético are fourth.

Savic sent it long, into the box... Memphis headed it on and there was Llorente, flying in to head in a late equaliser.

Modric's ball control is ideal at this stage of games. He just knows what to do and is so good at keeping the ball from opponents as well as winning free-kicks.

Simeone is practically on the pitch, offering some last-minute advice to his players.
Valverde sends a low cross into the box for Joselu, who hits it first time. Savic comes out of nowhere with a sliding block to keep the danger away. That is a superb piece of defending.
Kroos curls a corner in from the left. It evades everyone before Oblak comes out to collect at the far post.
The clock is ticking and the away side need a goal. Where is it going to come from, or is it going to come at all?

He turns Hermoso and Witsel inside out, nutmegging the former... and then curls an effort wide from a tight angle on the right. Beautiful football.
Real Madrid are happy to play on the counter. Atlético are looking to level things up, but when the home side win it back, they surge forward.
Ancelotti is fuming with that Rodrygo miss. He knows it's a glorious opportunity to extend the lead.

Oblak saves the forward's powerful drive from the right. It was four v two and a huge chance for Los Blancos to double their lead.
Bellingham is Madrid's focal point through the middle in attack. The England international goes over in the box but there is nothing in it and the play is waved on.
It's all slowed down here. Atlético have made their changes, bringing on fresh legs, but they have failed to really test Lunin, apart from the disallowed Savic goal.
That change will have to wait as Madrid charge forward... Kroos picks out Brahim on the left but his touch lets him down.
