During the second half of the Eldense-Castilla play-off game on Sunday, Castilla’s Brazilian player Vinicius Tobias picked up the ball on the sideline.

Just as the player was about to take the throw-in, a young boy (of no more than 12 years of age) behind him in the stand can be seen to shout “puto mono” (f*cking monkey) in his direction. After the match, the 19-year-old Brazilian player took to social media to offer his dismay regarding the incident.

The saddest thing... is that you never expect something like this from a child. A child yelling ‘monkey’!”, the player wrote on Instagram, sharing the television image where the child can be seen yelling in his direction. The defender added: “It is sad to see players suffering this type of prejudice. It’s neither the first nor the second time it’s happened; it’s a daily occurence and you can’t imagine how much it hurts. It has to end, the limits have been exceeded. Skin color means nothing, we are all the same. We want respect. This is the minimum!”.

The player has received plenty of messages of support in a season blighted by racist episodes in Spanish football with the most high profile coming at Mestalla in May when Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior challenged fans in the north stand after he was subject to racist abuse during the Valencia-Real Madrid game.

Three Valencia fans were later arrested with the club fined (45,000 euro) and hit with a partial stadium closure.
