Real Madrid confident about veteran defender’s future

As the LaLiga giants plan for the 2026/27 season, there is optimism at Real Madrid that a contract can be agreed.

Update:

Antonio Rüdiger is currently mulling over a contract offer from Real Madrid, with Los Blancos placing a one‑year extension on the table. Rüdiger’s physical condition and on‑field performances have convinced the club’s hierarchy to seek to prolong his stay by an additional season, a decision driven by his clear improvement in both fitness and form.

Club confident of Rüdiger deal

As has been the case with other players who have reached a certain age threshold (over 32), renewal deals at Real Madrid are now structured on a year‑to‑year basis. It happened with Toni Kroos, Nacho Fernández and Luka Modrić in recent seasons. Although Rüdiger has not yet responded, although there is a strong belief at Valdebebas that he will ultimately say yes, even if the German’s initial idea was to secure a two‑year extension.

In previous seasons, Saudi soccer came knocking with extremely lucrative financial offers, but Rüdiger was always clear that his future lay at Real Madrid. At present, Saudi Arabia has slowed down recruitment due to the conflict in the Middle East, leaving many players who once saw their future there in a holding pattern, waiting to see how the situation evolves.

Inside the club, there is significant appreciation for the work Rüdiger has done to achieve a full physical recovery. The defender sought solutions to his problems outside Spain and eventually found them, after spending a year playing at less than full capacity. Even then, he consistently stepped up, faced the challenge head‑on, and delivered whatever the team needed - something Carlo Ancelotti often held up as an example for the rest of the squad.

This season, Rüdiger has featured in 25 matches across LaLiga, the Champions League, and the UEFA Super Cup. More importantly, over the last month and a half he has once again become the unquestioned leader of the Real Madrid back line. Head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has entrusted the German with that leadership role, and the center back’s response has been emphatically positive, underlining that his physical level is more than sufficient for the club’s decision‑makers to envision one more season at the top level.

The defender’s next objective is simple: to finish the season as strongly as possible with Real Madrid and then round off his international career by representing Germany at the World Cup. At no point has Rüdiger prioritized his preparation for the global tournament over his performances for Los Blancos; his focus has always been on finding peak form and delivering for Real Madrid. At times, the road ahead looked extremely difficult, but he never once threw in the towel.

Rüdiger’s Real record

Rüdiger joined Real Madrid in 2022 and, despite an early period in which establishing himself as an automatic starter was far from easy, his signing can and should be viewed as a resounding success. He arrived on a free transfer and has gone on to play a decisive role in winning a Champions League, a LaLiga title and a Copa del Rey, amassing 177 appearances in the process.
