Marcelo lifted the LaLiga trophy this afternoon, as Real Madrid claimed their 35th Spanish league title, and the Brazilian is now the Real Madrid player with the most titles in the history of the club, with 24, ahead of the legendary Paco Gento. However Marcelo, who has now won six LaLiga titles, doesn’t even make the top-five Real Madrid players with most Championships.

Paco Gento - most LaLiga titles with Real Madrid

Real Madrid’s most successful league winner is Paco Gento, who won 12 titles with the club. He’s also the only player ever to win the European Cup (now the Champions League) six times. Marcelo has four Champions Leagues and is still hopeful of a fifth this season, but with his time at the club coming to an end the Brazilian, left-footed like Gento, won’t be able to catch the Spaniard there either.

League titles with Madrid

After Gento with 12, the next on the list is Pirri, who won 10, then Amancio, Santillana and José Antonio Camacho with nine each, followed by Manolo Sanchís (Junior), Alfredo Di Stefano and Miguel Ángel, all with eight.

All of them Real Madrid legends from different golden eras of the club’s storied history - notably it was Di Stefano who backed Gento to go on to great things - when there were doubts at the club over the capabilities of the impetuous youngster it was the Argentinean legend who came out in his defense, proving at the same time his own abilities to spot footballing talent.

Santillana, Camacho and Sanchís benefited from the league titles won by the Quinta del Buitres, who won the championship five times in a row, while the legendary Miguel Ángel trademark longevity meant he won titles in three different decades, the first in 1968-69, the last in 1985-86. Amancio was the leader at the club during the ‘Ye-yés’ team of the 60s, alongside Pirri, ensuring the end of the era of Di Stefano, Puskas and Company was less traumatic than it otherwise would have been.
