Real Madrid lose key star ahead of Manchester City fixture
Militão felt a twinge while running and clutched his left hamstring.
The Bernabéu fell silent: Militao injured. Another defender gone and, at the same time, the defender with no equal. The kaiser; the undisputed one. He has broken down and it looks alarming.
In fact, the club is breathing pessimism: “Very worrying.” It happened midway through the first half against Celta Vigo in LaLiga, at 0–0 — a sprint to stop an attack... and a sharp pain. All on his own, as he planted his foot. A muscle tear that looks severe: he was carried off by the medical staff, unable even to put weight on it. Rüdiger had to come on.
What injury does Militão have? When will he be back?
For now, that is all that is known. And that will practically be all that is known until tomorrow. The plan is for him to undergo an MRI in the next 24 hours — they would wait 48 hours only if the area is still very inflamed tomorrow. That is when the degree of the tear will be determined, but the signs are very bad. So bad that even without tests it is already guaranteed he will not face Manchester City. In the short term, Militao is out.
And this means the rain keeps pouring on already soaked ground: six of Real Madrid’s ten defenders are injured. In other words, 60 per cent of Xabi Alonso’s back line is broken: Carvajal (arthroscopy on his right knee), Trent (tear in the left quadriceps rectus femoris), Huijsen (knee discomfort), Alaba (right soleus discomfort), Mendy (tear in the right hamstring) and now Militao.
This is the third time Militao has been in the treatment room this season. Although the first was so minor it barely counts — a heavy knock in the derby. He missed the trip to Almaty, but played against Villarreal in the next match. He was genuinely injured on 18 November in Brazil versus Tunisia — a tear in the right adductor magnus. He missed two matches, Elche and Athens. Now he has this injury, one that really does look worrying.

And this is the situation three days before Manchester City. Before hosting Haaland. Only Huijsen has any chance of starting that night... and those chances are slim. As things stand, the outlook points to Valverde at right-back, with Rüdiger and Asencio in central defence. That is basically all there is. And it means Joan Martínez will have to be even more regularly involved with the first team than initially planned. While waiting for Dean, Xabi will go into that match with four defenders — Rüdiger, Asencio, Carreras and Fran García. The rest are out. Militao, broken.
