Teenaged defender Lamini Fati is set for inclusion in Real Madrid’s squad to face Celta Vigo in LaLiga on Friday. It’s not official yet, but it’s very likely. With an injury crisis hitting hard, the 19-year-old is set to be drafted in from Madrid’s ‘B’ team, as the senior squad heads to Galicia without Éder Militão, Dean Huijsen and David Alaba.

A left‑footed center back standing just over six feet tall, Fati was born in Madrid and developed at Unión Adarve, before making major leaps in his career. From Leganés’ reserve side, he moved to Real Madrid’s Under-19s. And he kept climbing… all the way to Castilla, Madrid’s second team, where he now plies his trade. Competing for a spot that doesn’t come cheap. Working and waiting for a chance that now appears to be within reach: a call-up to the first team.

News broke this Thursday: Alaba is out for the trip to Vigo, and fellow center back Raúl Asencio is doubtful. Two situations adding to the already known issues: Militão remains in the infirmary (the idea is for him to return after the March international break) and Huijsen is suspended (he picked up his fifth yellow against Getafe).

As of now, Antonio Rüdiger is the only fully fit center back in the first team. And although Asencio is expected to start in Vigo, he’s in the final stretch of recovering from a neck strain. Whether he’s ready for 90 minutes is a mystery. So eyes turn to Castilla. And the situation there is also delicate: Joan Martínez and Víctor Valdepeñas are injured - both starting center backs. They’re each about two weeks away from returning. So the focus shifts to Fati, who is set for his big opportunity.

So who is Lamini Fati?

Born in the Spanish capital in April 2006, Fati’s mother is from Angola and his father, from Guinea‑Bissau. His preference would be to represent Spain if the youth national teams call - though he isn’t ruling anything out. His signing was a true gamble, both sides. Fati was a center back with Leganés’ reserve team when La Fábrica called in late 2024. The price: just over €100,000 ($115,000). And the proposal: join the Under-19s. On paper, a step back. But he accepted, trusting that his game would break down doors on its own. And it has.

After splitting time with Real Madrid C, he moved up to Castilla, where he’s lived through ups and downs. He started as a regular alongside Martínez. A pairing that clicked perfectly: Martínez on the right, Fati on the left. Both quick, both with quality on the ball. The formula worked. But things began to shift - also because of the emergence of other teammates. Valdepeñas’ breakout raised the bar for the starting job, pushing Fati back. A step down in recent months. The starting duo became Martínez‑Valdepeñas. Fati fell into the chasing pack, battling for minutes with Mario Rivas. And recently he’s been playing because the starters are injured.

What’s Lamini Fati’s playing style?

He’s a rock at the back - a physical marvel,” they say in Valdebebas. “He blends speed, strength, and great ball control - he’s incredibly complete.” That’s the key. His ability to do just about everything. He excels in one‑on‑one situations, whether muscling up in a duel or recovering with his pace. His biggest strength: winning battles. And on the flip side, he’s working on sharpening positional details - staying in line, perfecting the distances he should maintain with every opponent in every scenario. Nuts and bolts to tighten. But there’s a lot of raw potential.

Fati has also earned praise for his exceptional ability to adapt to new environments. “It feels like he’s been here for years,” was the club’s view a few months back. A quiet, reserved individual who is hugely hardworking, he has registered 17 appearances for Castilla, and has UEFA Youth League experience with the Under-19s. Small steps, but firm ones. He has a strong chance of being included in tomorrow’s first-team squad, which will be announced before Los Blancos fly to Vigo at noon local time (6:00 a.m. ET).
