Real Madrid set to become first team to join the ‘500 club’
Carlo Ancelotti’s men face city rivals Atlético Madrid on Tuesday night in the first leg of the 2024-25 Champions League Round of 16.
On Tuesday night, the Spanish capital braces itself as the Santiago Bernabeu hosts what is set to be a spicy European Madrid derby as Real Madrid face Atlético Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
The game will mark Real Madrid’s 500th match in the European Cup as Carlo Ancelotti’s men remain in the hunt to add to their record fifteen victories.
‘Los Blancos’ become the first club to reach the 500 game milestone in European football’s most prestigious club competition. The Bernabeu outfit have won 301 games, drawn 85 draws and suffered 113 in their 499 matches to date.
Trailing Madrid in the all-time European Cup/Champions League ranking are Bayern Munich with 404 matches, followed by Barcelona (357), Juventus (311) and Benfica (302).
Real Madrid remain the ‘kings of Europe’ with fifteen titles, followed AC Milan (7), Bayern Munich and Liverpool (6), Barcelona (5) and Ajax (4).
Madrid’s first appearance in the competition was back in September 1955, was a 2-0 win at the Charmilles stadium in Geneva against Swiss side Servette, with goals from Miguel Muñoz and Rial.
