What next for Real Madrid?

Real Madrid have another free midweek and are next in action away to Valencia on Saturday 2 March (kick-off at 3pm ET). 

Sevilla, meanwhile, play their next game on the same day at home to Real Sociedad. 

Real Madrid 1-0 Sevilla: what do the stats say?

Far more possession and shots for the home side, although both sides were "expected" to score a similar number of goals, largely because of two clear-cut chances crated by Sevilla, which were the best in the game. Madrid's persistence paid off and the visitors never looked like scoring after falling behind. 

Sevilla remain 15th after late defeat

Sevilla weren't expected to get anything against Real Madrid, although they almost did. They weren't massively threatening but did have a couple of really good chances, while they will take heart from a solid defensive display. 

Was Antonio Rüdiger offside?

Well, yes, he clearly was. But was he interfering with play, more to the point? The German didn't try to get the ball into the box, although Sevilla will argue his presence influenced how they defended. 

Needless to say, Madrid fans on social media say there was no way he was interfering, and many others (mostly Barça supporters, it seems) reckon he clearly was. 

Real Madrid extend unbeaten run to eight games

Six wins and two draws in their last eight matches for Real Madrid. And they have at least four first-team players coming back in the next couple of weeks.  

Real Madrid eight points clear of Barcelona in LaLiga

For much of that game, it looked as if Madrid were going to drop two more points and leave the door slightly open for Barcelona and Girona. Modric had other ideas, though. An eight-point lead for Carlo Ancelotti's team, although it will come down to six if Girona defeat Rayo Vallecano on Monday.

Sub Luka Modric settles it late on for Real Madrid! Carlo Ancelotti's side are eight points clear at the top of LaLiga. 

Sow boots Kroos from behind and is next in the book. Sevilla are going to run out of time fast.

Sevilla have managed to wrestle control of possession but haven't really threatened an equaliser. Three minutes to go. 

Ancelotti still has it...

Or does he? The Madrid coach flicks a boot at a ball which flies out of play. It could go anywhere, and it does, although he got decent contact on it.

Is that a record? Nianzou is booked literally seconds after coming on for trodding on Ceballos. 

Double change for Sevilla

That was a good chance for Sevilla! Suso whips the corner in and Kike Salas flashes a header across goal and wide! Marcelo Salas might have stuck that away, 

Ceballos on for Brahim

Before said corner, Dani Ceballos, new hairstyle and all, comes on for Brahim. 

They do, however, have a corner! Could this lead to an equaliser?

One of infuriating aspects of modern soccer...

Sevilla have the chance to feed a pass into Madrid box and instead decide to pass the ball sidewards into a less threatening position...

The good news for Sevilla is there should be at least six or seven minutes of added time. They need to change the flow of the game though. 

Kroos goes down in the box and the home fans are up in arms. But there's nothing doing in terms of a penalty. 

From what we've seen in most of the second half, Sevilla don't look like equalising. 

The goal stands! Madrid could be going eight points clear!

Sevilla are furious...they think there's an offside in the build-up (which there was, although was Rüdiger interfering with play?).

Vázquez gets in behind Salas and tries to cut the ball back but Ramos is perfectly placed to intercept!

The German opts to cross and Salas heads clear. No way through. 

Modric is clipped on the edge of the box and Madrid have a free kick just on the edge of the box. Kroos incoming.

Torres, Romero and Navas off. Juanlu, Véliz and Suso replace them.

This is interesting...

Modric comes on for Nacho, which presumably means Tchouaméni will drop into central defence. 

Brilliant defensive work from Vinicius to stop En-Nesyri from getting away. Although it looks as if the Sevilla striker has hurt himself. 

Vázquez puts a cross into a dangerous area right in front of goal...but there's nobody there to attack it. Exactly where Haaland would've been..

Kroos fires one towards the far post and it's on target, but Ramos heads away before Nyland has to intervene!

Ocampos booked

Ocampos chops down Vázquez, is booked, and Madrid have a free kick in a very dangerous position...

Rodrygo effort beaten away!

Maybe Madrid are starting to wind it up again? Rodrygo drives into the box and shoots from an almost impossible angle, with Nyland beating the ball to safety. 

Another shot from Vinicius...but that's meat and drink for Nyland. An easy stop from 25 yards. 

Navas slides in hard on Vinicius and just gets a nick on the ball...no foul!

That break in play might actually have done Sevilla a favour. Madrid were building up a head of steam. 

Back underway. With a new man in the middle - Fernández Cuervo.

Play has been stopped for at least three minutes while the ref takes all his mics off and passes them to his colleague. We'll have quite a few minutes of injury time at the end.

I think it's the first time I've had to do one of these. Díaz De Mera Escudero won't be able to continue, fourth official Fernández Cuervo is about to replace him...

Referee Díaz De Mera Escudero seems to have suffered a calf injury and is now receiving treatment. It's all going on now!

Kroos strides forward and has Rodrygo in space in the box but, unusually for him, picks out a blue shirt rather than a white one. 

Sevilla need to try and weather this storm. 

Vinicius curls just wide!

A goal surely must be coming? Another strike from Vinicius, which this time curls just wide of the post!

Vinicius gets to the goal line and fizzes the ball cross goal. Salas does really well to stop it reaching Mendy, of all people!

Nyland makes great save from Vinicius!

It's all happening now! Vinicius curls one with his left foot but Nyland beats it away with his left hand!

Rodrygo shoots inches over!

Another near miss! Rodrygo drifts in from the left, drifts in a bit more, Ramos slips...the Brazilian pings it and it flies just over the angle of post and bar!

This has been a lively start to the second half!

UNBELIEVABLE SAVE FROM LUNIN!

How did he keep that out?!

Ocampos breaks away down the left and picks out a perfect cross for Romero, who catches it perfectly but is somehow denied by Lunin!

I've just seen a replay of that Valverde chance and that really didn't deserve to go in. The midfielder kicked the ball with his right foot onto his left knee and it ricocheted off the post. 

Brahim attempts to weave his magic down the Madrid right but Salas sticks to his guns really well and wins a free kick inside his own box. 

Sevilla race up the other end and Lunin has to be quick off his line to stop En-Nesyri from getting in behind.

Valverde hits the post!

So close to the opener! Valverde meets Brahim's low cross, miscues it but it comes back off the post and is kicked out for a corner!

En-Nesyri threatens to get in behind for the visitors but Rüdiger is alert to the danger and gets across to snuff out the attack. 

Madrid immediately go on the attack with Vinicius down the left but the Brazilian's cross is blocked and eventually cleared.

Sevilla get the second half rolling!

As it stands, Madrid will be going six points clear of Barcelona and seven ahead of Girona, who will have a game in hand. 

Here come the teams for the second half! What do we have in store for us?

Real Madrid 0-0 Sevilla: half-time thoughts

Real Madrid did most of the pressing in the first half but have had little to show for their efforts. Vázquez thought he had broken the deadlock after just nine minutes, only for VAR to rule Nacho had fouled En-Nesyri in the build-up.

Sevilla’s Moroccan striker had earlier wasted an excellent chance minutes after kick-off in what was the visitors’ only real effort on goal.

Vinicius and Rodrygo in particular looked lively, but Ramos and Badé kept the door shut expertly at the back. Valverde’s fierce strike from range just before half time, which was just about tipped over by Nyland, was Madrid’s most threatening moment.

That En-Nesyri chance is the reason Sevilla's expected goals figure is higher than Real Madrid's. The stats from our friends at Sofascore also show us that was the visitors' only effort on goal in the opening period.

The best chance of the first half actually fell to Sevilla in the opening minutes, with En-Nesyri blazing high, wide and not very handsome after being picked out by Romero's low cross. Should've done better there. 

Few opportunities for Real Madrid

Chances to score have been few and far between for Real Madrid. Vinicius and Tchouaméni efforts have gone fairly comfortably wide, with Valverde's trademark piledriver right at the end of the half the closest the hosts have come to scoring, other than Vázquez's disallowed goal in the ninth minute.

Valverde missile tipped over!

That was moving all over the place! Valverde tried his luck from 30 yards and Nyland only just manages to tip it over!

Tchouaméni twists and turns into the box and attempts a low cross, which takes a nick off a defender and into the arms of Nyland. No way through.

Four minutes of injury time to be played. 

Both sides losing possession an awful lot in the last few minutes of the half. Sevilla aren't committing many bodies forward. 

Brazilian brilliance!

Brilliant wing play from Vinicius! The Brazilian skips away from three Sevilla players and gets to the goal line, but his clipped cross floats just over the crossbar. 

Vinicius plays a promising low ball into the box from the left but Salas nips in to clear just when it looked as if Valverde might pounce. 

Tchouaméni hits the net...!

A rare effort on goal for the hosts and Tchouaméni finds the net...but the wrong side of it with his swinger (left foot). 

Badé takes a leaf out of Ramos' book as he goes in hard - but fairly - on Vinicius in the box. Again, perfectly timed. 

Ramos goes in hard on Brahim

Vintage Ramos.- again - as he leaves a bit on Brahim after nicking the ball off him. 

Kroos booked for dissent

Badé crashes into Kroos (not the other way around) and the Madrid man is harshly penalised, which he isn't best pleased about. He's booked for dissent and former teammate Ramos has to intervene to stop the German continuing his complaints to the ref. 

Romero goes down in the box

As soon as I say that, Navas whips in a cross from the right and Romero goes down at the back post after a tangle in the box with Vázquez. No penalty. 

Sevilla had a few promising attacks early on but they've diminished as the half has progressed. They're not offering much of a threat at the moment. 

Since I said Rodrygo and Vinicius were struggling to find each other, they've found each other at least three times. Which can't be good for Sevilla. 

Vinicius curls wide!

Vinicius cuts inside from the left and curls a strike a yard wide from the edge of the box!

Vinicius slides in on Badé from behind and is maybe a bit lucky not to see yellow there, on first view. A frustrating opening for the Brazilian. 

Things aren't clicking for Real Madrid in the final third. Rodrygo and Vinicius can't seem to be able to find each other at the moment, despite their best efforts. 

Ocampos comes in from the left and whips a pass into Romero in the box, but the ball gets away from the striker and the chance has gone. 

Ancelotti unhappy again as Sevilla win a free kick in midfield for a foul on Ocampos. The Italian looks unusually ruffled. 

There hasn't been too much of a threat to the Sevilla goal since Vázuqez's disallowed strike. The visitors will be happy with their start. 

What a waste from Vinicius. He and Rodrygo are two against one down the left but his cross to his compatriot is severely overhit and Nyland collects. 

Vázquez takes a HUGE risk as he tries to head the ball back to Lunin. Sow thinks he can get it and challenges the Madrid keeper, who just gets there first. Cue more handbags between several players. The Sevilla man had every right to go for it. 

Not for the first time, Salas picks up possession and looks to get Madrid turned. En-Nesyri is the target and forces Lunin to rush off his line to clear. 

The German plays it short to Vinicius and then Brahim, whose cross is deflected into the arms of Nyland. Never give a corner the big build-up on a live blog. 

Rodrygo wins Madrid their first corner. Kroos to take.

After a promising start, the game has become very stop-start. Brahim is next to have his progress halted illegally. 

Lucas Vázquez is still alive and OK to carry on, it seems. 

Ocampos shot tipped over! Vázquez down!

Another break in play as Vázquez takes a whack in the face from Ocampos, who he whacked in the head at the start of the game. The Sevilla attacker then had a shot, which was unconvincingly nudged over by Ocampos.

The kind of decision you'd be unhappy with if it went against you either way.

The referee has come over to see whether Nacho fouled En-Nesyri before Vinicius got the ball. Ancelotti has been shown a yellow card for complaining...

We all know what's coming, we just don't know how long it'll take. 

Sevilla aren't happy, they think there was a foul in the build-up on En-Nesyri.

Sevilla will do well to create a better chance than that in the rest of the game.

What a chance for Sevilla! Romero runs onto Ocampos' pass and plays a brilliant ball across the box for the on-rushing En-Nesyri, who blazes wide when he should've done much better!

Ramos slides in on Vinicius in the box

You can't teach an old dog new tricks, can you? Vinicius looks as he if might be clean through in the box but Ramos slides in top chop the ball away from him. Risky, but perfectly timed. 

Sevilla knock the ball about for the first time but Salas' ball over the top for Romero is waaaaay too hard and runs through to Lunin. 

Brahim Díaz is up and running! He skips past Salas and outruns Ocampos but Ramos comes across to mop up the danger. 

Real Madrid have quickly settled into a period of possession. No attacking threat so far, though. 

Oooft, that looked a sore one for Ocampos, who got an accidental kick in the head from Vázquez as they both fought for the ball out on the Sevilla left. 

There was no particular tribute for Ramos but his name was read out last over the PA systems when the teams were announced, which gave the fans the chance to give him a round of applause. 

Vinicius thinks he's won an early corner straight from kick-off but no, sir, goal kick given.

UFC star Ilia Topuria takes honorary kick off

He's got some right hand on him, but his right foot isn't bad either. Topuria puts a bit of oomph into his honorary kick-off, as you expect from a UFC fighter. 

No special Real Madrid tribute for Ramos

There had been rumours that Real Madrid might offer some kind of tribute to former player Sergio Ramos, who spent 16 years with the club. That doesn't appear to be happening, although there are suggestions the fans might have something ready.

Five points clear with just 13 games left to play (12 for Barcelona), is anyone betting against Real Madrid adding another league title to their list of honours?

Los Blancos have won LaLiga on 35 occasions, most recently in 2021-22. You won't be surprised to hear Barça are second on 27.

The teams are out for the warm-ups at the Bernabéu! Worryingly for Sevilla, Jesús Navas looks as if he's just played 90 minutes in this snap. Let's hope it's just bad light/a bad angle.

Fresh from winning the UFC Featherweight Championship against Alexander Volkanovski, Spanish-Georgian fighter Ilia Topuria will take the honorary kick-off in today's game at the Bernabéu. 

Isaac Romero: Sevilla's player to watch

Again, it's tempting to go for Sergio Ramos on his Real Madrid return, but that would be boring, wouldn't it?

Academy product Isaac Romero gets the nod instead. There wasn't a great deal of hype about the 23-year-old striker but since he came into the team in January, he's scored three times in six games and helped Quique Sánchez Flores turn Sevilla's form around.  

Brahim Díaz: Real Madrid's player to watch

The easy pick would be Vinicius, but I'm going for Brahim Díaz as Madrid's player to watch against Sevilla. The little playmaker has been in brilliant form in recent weeks having hardly played in the first few months or the season, and starts in attack alongside Rodrygo and the boy Vini.

His goal against RB Leipzig in the Champions League 10 days ago was as Lionel Messi-like as anything I've seen from anyone not called Lionel Messi.

Ooooh, now this is interesting. Not a single earbud in sight as Sevilla pitch up at the Bernabéu. 

Two different approaches, but what does it all mean? Psychologists would have a field day.

To say things weren't going great for Sevilla a few weeks ago would be something of an understatement. Between 9 December and 21 January, they lost six league games out of seven. However, they are unbeaten in four since then, with two victories coming against Atlético Madrid and Rayo Vallecano, teams Real Madrid haven't been able to beat of late,

Real Madrid bounce back from Atlético cup defeat

Real Madrid have only lost twice this season, both times to Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano. Their most recent loss to their city rivals came on 18 January in the Copa del Rey, but they have bounced back well, winning five times and drawing twice since then. Although last weekend's draw at Rayo Vallecano enabled Barcelona to claw back a couple of points near the top.

Sevilla team to play Real Madrid: Ramos starts

Anyone fancy Ramos to score the winner with a header in the 93rd minute? The former Madrid man starts in central defence, with fellow veteran Jesús Navas at right-back. 

Nyland; Navas, Badé, Ramos, Salas; Soumaré, Sow, Óliver Torres, Ocampos; Isaac, En-Nesyri.

Carvajal and Camavinga banned after Rayo misdemenours

Dani Carvajal was sent off in injury time against Rayo Vallecano last weekend and Eduardo Camavinga saw his fifth yellow card of the season, so both serve one-match suspensions. 

Aaand, we've done it. No more Real Madrid absentees. Phew. 

Light at the end of the tunnel for Courtois (and Militão)

Thibaut Courtois has been out since the start of the season after tearing his ACL but has returned to training and is closing in on his first-team return, which could come in March or April.

Defender Eder Militão, who suffered a similar injury just a few days later, is a little further behind but should also be back for the closing stages of the season. 

David Alaba, however, the third member of the ACL tear trio, won't play again until next season. 

Joselu set for three weeks out

Joselu hasn't been a regular starter for Real Madrid this season and was never going to be. Yet he has made an important contribution, popping up with a number of big goals (14 in all). But he won't be adding to his tally in the immediate future as he is set for three weeks on the sidelines with his own ankle issue. 

When will Jude Bellingham be back for Real Madrid?

Bellingham has been nothing short of a revelation for Los Blancos this season, scoring 20 times in 29 games so far. He picked up an ankle injury in the win over Girona a couple of weeks but is nearing the end of his recovery. Madrid are hopeful he will available to play against Valencia next weekend. 

Sergio Ramos makes Real Madrid return

One man who will be playing for the visitors is Sergio Ramos, who spent 16 years with Real Madrid. In that time, 671 games, scored 101 goals (he's a defender, remember), won five LaLiga titles and four Champions Leagues.

"The return of the King," as they say.

Long-term absentees Thibaut Courtois, David Alaba and Eder Militão are still out. They've been joined in the treatment room recently by Jude Bellingham and Joselu (more on them in a moment). On top of that, Dani Carvajal and Eduardo Camavinga are both suspended. The tea lady almost made the bench.

Sevilla's season not going to plan

Let's just say Sevilla have underperformed so far this season. The Andalusians, who played in the Champions League group stage after winning last season's Europa League (of course they did) are alreadyon their third manager of the campaign - Quique Sánchez Flores. They are all the way down in 15th spot in the LaLiga table, although an upturn in form has seen them move six points clear of the relegation zone, which they wouldn't have expected to be anywhere near.

Barcelona close the gap to Real Madrid at the top

For the first time in as long as anyone can remember, Barcelona put in a fine performance against Getafe on Saturday and ran out 4-0 winners. They are now five points behind leaders Real Madrid at the top of LaLiga. They couldn't actually defend their title, could they?
