Real Madrid targets Dortmund star for summer defensive revamp
With Antonio Rüdiger and David Alaba out of contract this summer, Madrid is reportedly turning to Germany again for defensive reinforcements.
According to German outlet Bild, Real Madrid is the only realistic destination for Nico Schlotterbeck if he decides to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer, a year before his contract expires.
Dortmund is facing a tough challenge in securing Schlotterbeck’s renewal. The center-back, 26, is reportedly undecided about extending his contract through 2027 because Madrid has already expressed serious interest in signing him.
Schlotterbeck’s two options
Bild reports that Schlotterbeck will make his final decision on a contract extension before Germany’s upcoming international matches against Switzerland and Ghana in March. For now, the player is considering only two options: staying at Dortmund or moving to Real Madrid.
Bayern interest cools
Schlotterbeck had also been linked to Bayern Munich, but Dayot Upamecano’s expected contract extension makes them a less certain destination.
How much would Schlotterbeck cost Madrid?
Madrid, meanwhile, is reportedly aiming to sign two center-backs this summer, with at least one, like Schlotterbeck, left-footed. The transfer fee is expected to range between €40 million and €50 million, or roughly $47.5 million to $59.3 million.
Contracts for David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger are set to expire this summer, forcing Madrid to reinforce their backline. Schlotterbeck could be a perfect fit, offering an opportunity for the Dortmund’ star to move to a top club at a prime moment in his career.
