Real Madrid vs Mallorca: Spanish Super Cup semifinal live updates

Real Madrid 3-0 Mallorca: full-time thoughts

A fully deserved victory for Real Madrid against a Mallorca team that never threatened a comeback after falling behind.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side made a rapid start in the first half, testing Greif on a number of occasions without creating any clear-cut chances.

Mallorca grew into the game in the first half and ended up having the two best chances, despite rarely being on the offensive. Larin was the guilty party, heading wide when unmarked and lifting the ball over the ball from a good position on the edge of the box.

Madrid were in total control in the second half, especially after Bellingham forced the ball over the line just after the hour mark after Rodrygo had headed off the post. After that, there was never any doubt, even if Mallorca managed to stay in the game.

The islanders rarely looked like scoring and an own goal from Valjent and a further strike from Rodrygo, both in injury time, ensured Los Blancos finished in style.

Real Madrid out to equal Barcelona's Spanish Super Cup record

On Sunday, Real Madrid will get the chance to draw level with Barcelona in terms of Spanish Super Cup victories. As it stands, the Catalans have won the competition a record 14 times, closely followed by Los Blancos on 14.

El Clásico final in the 2025 Spanish Super Cup

It's the final that everybody wanted, including the Spanish Soccer Federation (let's be honest). The 2025 Spanish Super Cup final will be a Clásico, with Real Madrid taking on Barcelona at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah on Sunday, January 12.

There have been a few disagreements, shall we say, after Real Madrid's third goal, with Maffeo, Vázquez and Raúl Asencio the protagonists. Oh, and Vinicius, who just had to get involved from the bench. It looks as if it's all fizzled out now, though.

Fulltime: Real Madrid 3-0 Mallorca

Real Madrid finish with a flourish! They will face Barcelona in the 2025 Spanish Super Cup final.

as.com

Vázquez curls in a fine cross from the right wing and Rodrygo only has to push it over the line to make it 3-0!

as.com
90+5

GOOOOOOOOOAAAAL REAL MADRID! RODRYGO!

Emphatic from Real Madrid!

as.com

It was so nearly a brilliant goal! Mbappé looks to play a one-two with Brahim, whose slide-rule pass is almost inch-perfect. Valjent tries to cut it out but only succeeds in scooping the ball past Greif and into his own net.

as.com
90+2

GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAL REAL MADRID! OWN GOAL!

And that will be that!

as.com
90

Mojica gets round the outside of Vázquez but fires a cross straight into the hands of Courtois.

as.com

That should be a decent amount of time for Mallorca to try for an equaliser, but they look dead on their feet.

as.com
90

Six minutes of injury time to be played.

as.com
88

Mallorca toss a high cross into the box, which Courtois claims unchallenged. This is totally petering out for Jagoba Arrasate's team.

as.com
86

Real Madrid substitution

Vinicius, who has only had an impact in the last 10-15 minutes, is replaced by Brahim Díaz.

as.com
85

Camavinga shot saved!

A decent effort from Camavinga brings out a fine stop from Greif, but in reality it was a bit of a waste. The midfielder had several passing options, which would have made a second goal more likely.

as.com
83

Mbappé has looked really sharp today but not there. He gets into a decent position in the box but is easily dispossessed, allow Mallorca to try to mount some sort of attack.

as.com

I can't see any sign of a Mallorca goal right now (the phrase no Real Madrid fan wants to read).

as.com
80

Mallorca need to get a shift on. 10 minutes to go. Passes like that one from Rodríguez, which sails over Mojica's head and out of play, won't help.

as.com
78

Mbappé shot saved!

Here they come again! Vinicius shows great strength to hold off Valjent and play the ball through for Mbappé, whose effort from a tight angle is tipped past the post by Greif.

as.com
76

Rodrygo effort saved!

A quick-fire flurry from Madrid, as Bellingham rolls the ball into Rodrygo, whose low strike is well kept out by Greif.

as.com
76

Vinicius shoots wide!

That was brilliant from Vinicius...until the shot! He weaves his way between Maffeo and Mascarell and decides to shoot instead of pass from a tight angle. Wrong decision as his effort flies well wide.

as.com
74

Real Madrid substituion

Ceballos on for Valverde.

as.com
73

Camavinga booked

Camavinga joins Bellingham in the book after illegally halting a Mallorca attack.

as.com
71

Huge cheers as Madrid work the ball out brilliantly to Mbappé on the left. The Frenchman floats a cross in with the outside of his right boot, which Rodrygo can't quite get on the end of.

as.com
70

Mallorca substitutions

Navarro, Costa and Asano are on for Larin, Morlanes and Darder for Mallorca.

as.com
68

Valverde turns down the chance to shoot from the edge of the box, instead teeing up Camavinga, whose low effort is blocked.

as.com
66

From the corner, the ball looks to fall perfectly for Larin to shoot with his weaker left foot, but he tries to get it back onto his right and the chance has gone.

as.com
66

Can Mallorca find a way back into this? They have a corner and some big targets to aim for...

as.com
64

Bellingham yellow card

Bellingham follows up his goal with a yellow card for protesting after not getting a foul for a barge in the back.

as.com

Bellingham forces it over the line after Rodrygo heads off the post and Mbappé's close-range effort is saved by Greif. It all came from a quick free kick, a darting run from Mbappé and a fine cross from Vinicius.

as.com
61

GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAL REAL MADRID! BELLINGHAM!

Bellingham makes the breakthrough!

as.com
60

Rüdiger almost gets on the end of said free kick at the back post but a Mallorca head just flicks it away from him in time.

as.com
59

Well, that was certain to happen as soon as I said it, wasn't it? Maffeo chops down Vinicius and Madrid have a free kick in a dangerous position.

as.com
58

Say what you want about Maffeo's antics, but he's keeping Vinicius right out of this game. The Madrid winger tries to get past his opponent but ends up running the ball out for a goal kick.

as.com
56

Rüdiger shows why he's a central defender and not a left winger as he tries to get past Rodríguez, bringing a Real Madrid attack to a halt.

as.com
55

Close for Real Madrid! Bellingham tries to feed the ball through for Mbappé and almost does, but it's cut out just in the nick of time!

as.com

Play is now back underway after a short delay.

as.com
54

Real Madrid substitution

As I suspected, Tchouaméni is going off, replaced by Raúl Asencio.

as.com
52

Play has been stopped for a minute or two as Tchouaméni gets attention. He's up on his feet but looking pretty groggy.

as.com
50

Tchouaméni down

That looks a sore one for the Frenchman, who goes jaw first into Larin's shoulder and crashes to the ground. He might not be able to continue here.

as.com
50

More danger from Mallorca! Mojica sticks a useful cross into the back post but it's just too far ahead of Rodríguez and the chance has gone.

as.com
48

Bellingham whips in a cross looking for Mbappé at the back post... but it's horribly overhit and goes out for a goal kick.

as.com
46

Chance for Mallorca!

An immediate threat from Mallorca! Mojica, Larin and Muriqi are all involved but it falls to Rodríguez, who blazes over on the half volley.

as.com

Second half underway!

Real Madrid get us back underway! Surely we're going to get a goal or two here, right?

as.com

A big smile on Thibaut Courtois' face as he comes back out for the second half. He looks relaxed and he should be, he didn't have anything to do in the first period.

as.com

Real Madrid 0-0 Mallorca: half-time thoughts

A great start from Real Madrid, who tested Dominik Greif in the Mallorca goal on a number of occasions early on. Were any of the chances especially clear-cut? Not really. Did the Slovak have to make any incredible saves? No. That might be Carlo Ancelotti’s only criticism of his team, who did look really slick, though.

Mallorca haven’t attacked a great deal but have arguably had the two best chances. Both fell to Canadian striker Cyle Larin, who headed wide unmarked at the back post and lifted the ball over the bar from a good position.

Strangely, both managers might be reasonably happy: Ancelotti with how Madrid have played in general and Mallorca with how they ended the half - much more comfortably than they began it.

as.com

What happens if there's a draw after 90 minutes?

So, we're no closer to knowing whether Real Madrid or Mallorca will face Barcelona in Sunday's final. If today's game ends all square, there will be no extra time, with the game going straight to a penalty shootout. That's a rule change from previous seasons, in which 30 additional minutes were played. That applies to the final as well.

Half time: Real Madrid 0-0 Mallorca

And that's it for the first half! Mallorca will be happy to have escaped an early onslaught unscathed and with how the opening period finished.

as.com
45

One minute of injury time to be played.

as.com
44

Mojica is a lucky boy there! The Colombian should cut out Mbappé's cross from the left but totally misses it, which catches Bellingham, who's lurking behind him, off guard.

as.com
43

Two Madrid players, Mbappé and Vinicius, hit the deck in the box as Tchouaméni crosses from deep. Nothing doing, says the ref.

as.com
42

Vinicius floats a cross in from the left but it's straight into the hands of Greif. It's not been his day, so far. There's still time, though.

as.com
41

Bellingham shows he's more than just an attacking threat, racing back to dispossess Maffeo and get Madrid back on the attack. Superb from the Englishman.

as.com
39

Mallorca's twin towers almost combine to excellent effect. Muriqi loops a header back across goal for Larin, who is beaten to the ball by Rüdiger, aggressive as ever.

as.com
38

Rodrygo shoots over!

A lovely move from Madrid down the right! Bellingham gets on the end of it and pulls the ball back for Rodrygo, who shoots over under pressure from Darder!

as.com
36

Mbappé almost clean through!

Bellingham fizzes the ball through the Mallorca defence for Mbappé, who can't control it at an awkward height. If he had done, he would've been one-on-on with Greif.

as.com
34

Camavinga shoots wide

The big chance was for Rodrygo, though! The Brazilian shoots from a good position after some brilliant work from Bellingham, but his shot is well blocked. The ball comes out to Camavinga, who's left his shooting boots at home. Wide.

as.com
32

Mallorca substitution

Oh, no. Mallorca are being forced into a change. Central defender Antonio Raillo has picked up an injury, he's replaced by José Copete. Let's see if that disrupts the Mallorca defence, which was hanging on earlier but is coping a bit better now.

as.com
30

Maffeo and Vinicius are at it again! Again, the Brazilian is penalised for a foul but is then scooped up in the air by his opponents as he gets back to his feet. These two are best of friends and are just leading us all on, aren't they?

as.com
29

Larin shoots over!

Another good chance for Larin! Muriqi and then Rodríguez flick the ball into the path of Larin, who has a clear sight of goal but lifts the ball over the bar.

as.com
28

Camavinga shoots over

Camavinga has a go from all of 30 yards. Maybe should've passed. Well over the bar.

as.com
26

Rüdiger is a like a dog with a bone when it comes to defending. The ball is played into the feet of Larin, who has the big German defender all over him like a rash. Madrid win the ball back and go back on the attack.

as.com

Mallorca fans making themselves heard

The crowd in Jeddah is very pro-Madrid, with many locals supporting Los Blancos, it seems. If you're a Mallorca fan from Saudi Arabia reading this, get in touch on X (@English_AS). I suspect most of these brave souls have made the trip to the Middle East just for a game.

Right on cue, Muriqi gets his head to a free kick just a few yards from goal at the back post but can't find a teammate as he heads across the box.

as.com
23

As I suspected, Muriqi is proving to be a useful out-ball for Mallorca. Madrid need to be careful from set piece and crosses especially.

as.com
21

Credit to Jude Bellingham, who could easily have gone to ground under a challenge from Morlanes in the box but chooses to stay on his feet to get a shot away under pressure, which is blocked.

as.com

Is this Mbappé starting to look like the Mbappé we all know (and some love)?

as.com
19

Mbappé goes down in the box...

No penalty! That was brilliant from Mbappé, who shows quick feet and a turn of pace to get into the box in a split-second having picked it up on the left. He goes down in a heap in the area but there's not enough contact for a penalty, says the referee.

as.com
18

Huge chance for Larin!

Mallorca have offered nothing going forward...until now! Dani Rodríguez gets away from Rüdiger and has Larin all alone in the middle. His cross looks perfect but the Canadian completely mistimes his header and the ball goes wide!

as.com
16

Vinicius vs Maffeo part three: the Brazilian needlessly clips the Mallorca defender from behind. Free kick.

as.com

Don't think Thibaut Courtois has touched the ball yet...

as.com
14

Bellingham shot saved!

Bellingham patiently waits to have space for a shot on the edge of the box. He doesn't appear to catch it all the well, but it almost catches out Greif, who just gets across to it in time.

as.com

Maffeo vs Vinicius could be like watching Comedy Central. The Mallorca defender gently barges into the Madrid man off the ball, then goes down holding his face as the Brazilian lightly taps him in the chest...

as.com

Real Madrid are looking good so far, it has to be said.

as.com
11

Tchouaméni shot saved!

I was just about to say Mallorca had weathered the storm a bit, but Rodrygo got into a really dangerous position there and Tchouaméni has just forced Greif into making a low save from distance.

as.com
10

Rodrygo gets on the end of another brilliant pass, this time from Tchouaméni, in behind on the right. He tries to find Mbappé at the near post but the Frenchman is crowded out.

as.com
8

The next episode of Vini vs Maffeo sees the winger make space for a cross into the box, but it's comfortably held by Greif.

as.com
7

Egged on by the crowd Valverde tries one from more than 30 yards, which is blocked. Probably just as well for Mallorca.

as.com
6

First chance for Mbappé!

What a ball from Valverde! The Uruguayan drifts a brilliant pass over the top for Mbappé, who goes for the half-volley on the stretch but can't keep it down! It was just a bit too far ahead of him, to be fair.

as.com
5

The pro-Real Madrid crowd know Maffeo against Vinicius is going to be a key battle. Huge cheers as the Brazilian robs the full-back of possession, but he gives away a foul, which leads to mass booing.

as.com
4

Just as I say that, Mallorca get their first decent spell of possession, which should help them settle into the game.

as.com

Mallorca are struggling to have any meaningful possession so far. It's been all Real Madrid.

as.com
3

Rodrygo shot saved!

A Real Madrid onslaught so far! Rodrygo twists and turns and fires a powerful shot that Greif beats away from danger!

as.com
1

Vázquez shot saved!

The first effort on goal before the two-minute mark! Again Mbappé finds space on the left. His cutback is too far ahead of Bellingham but falls to the onrushing Vázquez, whose low shot of shuffled out of danger by Greif.

as.com
1

Real Madrid are first to threaten as Mbappé races away down the left. Valjent holds him up well and Raillo deals with the cross that comes in towards Bellingham.

as.com

Real Madrid vs Mallorca underway!

And away we go! Mallorca get the ball rolling, launching it long towards Muriqi. Probably not for the last time...

as.com

Mallorca held Real Madrid in previous meeting

Real Madrid and Mallorca have already met this season, playing out a 1-1 draw at Son Moix in August 2024. Rodrygo gave Los Blancos the lead in the first half before Vedat Muriqi equalised just after halftime. Ferland Mendy was sent off right at the end of the game.

That should give the underdogs some hope of causing an upset.

Real Madrid's super Super Cup record

Real Madrid have been one of the two most dominant teams in the Spanish Super Cup over the years. You'll never guess what the other one is...

Los Blancos have won the competition on 13 occasions, most recent last season, when they destroyed Barcelona 4-1 in the final, with Vinicius Jr scoring a hat-trick (Barça, however, get the last laugh, with 14 victories).

As I mentioned a little earlier on, Mallorca have lifted the trophy just once before, in 1998, when they defeated Barcelona 3-1 in a two-legged final. Will they get the chance to do so again on Sunday?

Mallorca's fine LaLiga season

Mallorca are going well in LaLiga, currently in sixth place in the standings after 19 games. And they are five points clear of seventh-placed Real Sociedad, who have a game in hand, admittedly. For context, the islanders' best ever finish is third; they are eight points behind third-placed Barcelona as it stands.

Their recent form hasn't been great, though. They've lostthree of their last five games, which includes a 3-0 Copa del Rey upset away to third-tier Pontevedra

Real Madrid top of LaLiga after turning form back around

Real Madrid have roared back into form after a patchy spell, by their own high standards. Between late October and early December, Los Blancos lost four games out of seven, which included a 4-0 home thrashing by Barcelona, a 3-1 home defeat by AC Milan, and away losses to Liverpool and Athletic Club.

They’re turned things around well, however, winning their last four games in a row in all competitions, whichincluded the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final. That’s taken them two points ahead of Atlético Madrid at the top of LaLiga, although their city rivals have a game in hand.

How Mallorca qualified for the Spanish Super Cup

Unlike Real Madrid, Mallorca didn't win anything last season. But they didn't have to to get into the Spanish Super Cup. As mentioned, the LaLiga and Copa del Rey runners-up also qualify, and they fell into the latter category.

Athletic Club only just pipped Mallorca to the Copa del Rey, winning in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw, although the result had no bearing on the 2025 Spanish Super Cup lineup, with both finalists qualifying thanks to Madrid and Barça finishing first and second in LaLiga last season.

How Real Madrid qualified for the Spanish Super Cup

Unless you completely switched off from soccer last season, which I'm betting you didn't, you'll be aware that Real Madrid did pretty well. They lifted the Champions League/European Cup for the 15th time and also won LaLiga, which is how they booked their ticket for the 2025 Spanish Super Cup.

Since 2020, the Spanish Super Cup has been played in Saudi Arabia and had four participants: the reigning LaLiga champions, the LaLiga runners-up, the Copa del Rey holders and the Copa del Rey runners-up.

Did you know two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash is a Mallorca fan? Yes, really. And not only that, he's one of the club's part owners

"The club has experienced great growth since we arrived and obviously being in LaLiga and doing well is the most important thing. Off the field we’ve taken important steps too in terms of infrastructure and with the modernisation of the stadium, which are essential for the future," Nash told AS' David Alonso earlier this week.

Here's the full interview with Nash, who reckons he now watches a lot more soccer than basketball.

Why is the Spanish Super Cup being played in Saudi Arabia?

The Spanish Super Cup used to be a two-legged final played at the start of the season and involved two teams: the reigning LaLiga champions and the previous season’s Copa del Rey winners. In 2018, the Spanish Soccer Federation (RFEF) took the game abroad for a first ever one-off final.

They then realised they could make considerably more money by inviting four teams to take part in the middle of the season, increasing the odds that both Real Madrid and Barcelona, the main Spanish money-spinners, would be involved. And with Saudi Arabia seemingly happy to throw cash at anything sport-related these days, the RFEF couldn’t fail to line their pockets. Most fans back home in Spain are not impressed, and neither they should be.

In case you're wondering what on earth Vinicius Jr's name is doing on the Real Madrid team sheet after he was sent off for slapping the Valencia goalkeeper in his team's last game, then I'm betting you're not alone. Can Dani Olmo play in the Spanish Super Cup final?

Barcelona’s well-documented financial problems have caused them plenty of embarrassment for a number of reasons, not least signing players for big money that they’re not sure they can register to play. That’s been the case with attacker Dani Olmo, who they were able to register for the first half of the season due to the unregistration of the injured Andreas Christensen, but who wasn’t initially registered for the second half of 2024/25 (from January 1 onwards). However, Barça won an appeal heard on Wednesday, almost at the time of their win over Athletic, and cantemporarily register Olmo, and fellow forward Pau Victor, which means they are both eligible to play in Sunday’s Spanish Super Cup final.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are gunning for a third trophy of the season already and are huge favourites to progress to the final, but you just never know in soccer, do you?. Especially as Mallorca as going along nicely in LaLiga. I’m Roddy and thanks for joining me for some Saudi Spanish cup capers.
