Real Madrid doing Real Madrid things. Sevilla were lucky to get away with giving up possession in their own half so many times in the first 45 minutes. The hosts’ pressing was really causing them issues and Modric’s opening goal was inevitable.
Did many see Lamela’s equaliser coming? Probably not. The Real Madrid defence certainly didn’t and he was left all alone to run through and square. That changed the complexion of the game for 15-20 minutes or so, with Sevilla gaining the upper hand and threatening the home goal on a few occasions.
But familiar failings tripped them up in the final quarter of an hour. They lost possession high up the pitch and, within a few seconds, Madrid had the ball in the net via Vázquez. A lightning counterattack. Valverde’s superb drivefrom distance two minutes later killed the game off with around 10 to go.
Other teams would lost their composure after conceding and Real Madrid were on the back foot for a spell. But this is far from the first time we’ve seen them go on to win a game late on after conceding an equaliser.

Sevilla drop down to 14th, only two points clear of the relegation zone. Most of the teams below them still have to plenty this weekend, so they might find themselves back in the bottom three come tomorrow night. Ouch.

Courtois, also on Movistar: "We woke up again after their goal and scored two great goals. We didn't start the second half they way we wanted to, that gave them hope. The changes drove us on."
"We've told Valverde that he needs to shoot more, they're impossible to stop."
Lamela, speaking to Movistar after the game, "Real Madrid are a team who'll punish you if you make even the smallest mistake". Can't argue with that.

Goals from Modric, Vázquez and Valverde do the business for Los Blancos. Lamela had given Sevilla hope of snatching at least a point early in the second half.
Another potential dead leg there, this time for Valverde. Gómez caught him high but got away with it.
Five minutes of stoppage time.
Rodrygo goes down in the box and (the fans) want a penalty. A very slight bodycheck from Jordán, perhaps. Nothing doing.
Unsurprisingly, those two goals have taken the wind completely out of Sevilla's sails. Real Madrid possession now.

Valverde is now Real Madrid's top scorer this season in the league, with six goals. That crept up on me.
There have been a few instances of Fede Valverde smashing the lights out of a football in recent times. Here's another one. One touch and hit from the edge of the box, it whistles into the corner. 'Golazo', as they say.

And that, I think, is that.
Is anyone surprised? It looked as if Sevilla had got past their vulnerability when losing possession, but no! Some quick passing allows Asensio to play Vini clean through on goal. Rather than shoot, the Brazlian rolls it to Vázquez for the easiest of tap-ins.

Changes aplenty
For Madrid, on come Rüdiger, Asensio and Lucas Vázquez for Carvajal, Mendy and Modric.
Sevilla bring on Rafa Mir and Delaney for Isco and Rakitic.
Real Madrid definitely look as if they've overcome the shock of conceding, they're back on the front foot.
Bono got a bang on his head for his troubles there. Short break in play but it looks as if he's going to carry on.
Big, BIG chance for Vini! The winger somehow gets to Rodrygo's lovely flick through ahead of Carmona, goes round Bono but can't steer it in from a tight, but not impossible, angle.
Twinkletoes from Rodrygo there. The Brazilian skips away from Jordán but shoots well wide from 25 yards. Nice footwork though.

Navas and Torres are replaced by José Carmona and Papu Gómez
Great block from Marcao! Valverde was lining up one of his piledrivers from range but the big Brazilian said no.

Could've been a dead leg for Vini there. Cynical from Gudelj as the Brazilian threatened to race away.
First change for Real Madrid
Camavinga on for Tchouaméni for the hosts.
Sevilla's turn to hound Madrid deep in their own half now. Navas, Torres and Lamela all putting Mendy under pressure by the corner flag,
Madrid seem to be settling back down a little bit after a tough few minutes. Still a few more loose passes that there were in the first half, though.
Real Madrid's inability to keep a clean sheet at home this season is really peculiar. Mallorca, Betis, Osasuna, Barcelona and Sevilla have now all scored once at the Bernabéu.
End-to-end! Bono makes a fairly comfortable save from Vini's low shot but it's Sevilla who came closest to a second goal. Montiel is again the instigator, intercepting Tchouaméni's pass and releasing Lamela, who cuts inside and curls just wide!
The goal has changed the game! Sevilla are knocking the ball around with much greater pace now and almost grab a second!Isco is alone at the back post but fires Navas' cross into the side netting.
Montiel has had a tough time with Vini but he gets the better of the Brazilian this time and plays a superb defence-splitting pass for Lamela, whose run hasn't been tracked. Courtois gets plenty on the Argentine's shot but it trickles over the line!

Sevilla are back in it!
This would be a decent 5-a-side team. If 5-a-side teams had two keepers.
A bit of possession for Sevilla after a shaky start to the half. Again, the issue they're having is that whenever they lose the ball, it looks as if Bono might have work to do.
No changes at half-time, by the time. As you were.
Real Madrid immediately on the attack, with Montiel doing well to block from Rodrygo!
Aaaand...we're back!
The first half has been all about Real Madrid's pressing. They knew that Sevilla would be intent on passing the ball out from the back no matter what and they've hunted them down in packs when they've had the chance. Jorge Sampaoli's men have got away with losing the ball in their own half on a few occasions but are treading on thin ice, and they've been helped by the fact that the hosts' front men, Vini especially, haven't quite been on top of their game. Madrid have been assured defensively and Courtois has had almost no work to do, although Sevilla have had a few decent spells of possession high up the pitch, which will give them a bit of hope.

Montiel, despite his defensive struggles, has got forward on a couple of occasions and is the first visiting player to trouble Courtois. It was a comfortable save for the Belgian from a tight angle, though.
Should be 2-0! Valverde's flick infield is intended for Rodrygo but it makes it way beyond the Sevilla defence to Vini, who's clean through on goal. He skips round Bono but his touch is too heavy and it runs out for a goal kick.
It's been coming and it almost came. Gudelj loses the ball in midfield and Madrid are all over him. They work it to Modric, who cleverly makes space for a shot in the box, which is blocked by Telles at the last second.
Rakitic steps up but hits the wall. Another one who should've done better.
Yellow for Tchouaméni for a foul on Lamela just as he was about to shoot. This is a good chance for Sevilla from the free-kick!
First real spell of pressure from Sevilla. It amounts to nothing, but it'll give them some encouragement. We've not seen much of Rakitic or Isco so far.
At the end of a long spell of possession, Valverde tees up Modric, who drags his shot wide from 25 yards. Not his best effort.
Another instance of Sevilla playing themselves into trouble. They're kind of getting away with it but I'm not sure Real Madrid will allow that to continue.
That was a let down. Kroos curls harmlessly over the bar.
Montiel next in the book! Vini latches onto Valverde's cross-field pass and chops inside his men, who, in turn, chops him down. Free-kick in a VERY dangerous position.
A nice move down the right flank from Sevilla ends with Montiel crossing into the box for Torres, but the ball is behind the former Atleti man and Madrid are able to clear.
First booking of the game for Jordán, a tactical foul to Rodrygo from bearing down on the Sevilla defence.
The next effort on goal also comes from Real Madrid. Another Vini run in from the left but his shot from the edge of the box is blocked away for a corner (which comes to nothing).
Some decent possession for Sevilla but all the danger is coming from the home side...
Rodrygo skips into the box and creates a great angle for an effort on goal. But he skews it high and wide when you would've fancied him to do better.
Really close from Alaba! His curling free-kick just misses the top corner!
Half-hearted appeals for a Sevilla penalty. Jordán crosses towards Lamela and Carvajal gets his body in the way (shall we say) to prevent the ball reaching the attacker. Nothing doing.
Sevilla are a bit too open when an attack breaks down and you don't want to be open when you're playing against the pace of Valverde, Vini and Rodrygo. It doesn't come anything this time but they need to watch out.
Unsurprisingly, considering Sampaoli is in charge, Sevilla have been trying to play the ball out from the back at every opportunity. And they've lost the ball three times already, on my count. Could be a long night.
A nightmare for Montiel, who loses the ball deep inside his own half to Vini. The Brazilian skips into the box, evades the challenge from the backtracking full-back and picks out Modric's run to the back post. A perfectly time burst into the box and easy tap-in for the Croat.

That didn't take long...
Spoke too soon! Bono gifts possession to Vini but he plays a poor pass into the box when he should've picked out Rodrygo. The two then link up again and Vini beats his man at the edge of the area, his touch is too heavy though and it runs through to Bono.
A nice corner flag clash between Dani Carvajal and Marcao there. Not much else going on in the opening minutes.
Some early doubts over whether Sevilla are playing with a back four or five. I went with a four and it looks like that to me in the opening moments.

Sevilla don't like the Bernabéu...
Considering they've been one of the top teams in Spain for the best part of 20 years, it's mad to think Sevilla haven’t won in the Santiago Bernabéu since a 4-3 victory in December 2008.
And even madder is that 16 of the 17 clashes in Madrid since then have ended in a win for the hosts.
They must be due one, surely...
How's the back, Thibaut?
Looks alright, to be fair.
I went to a game between Spain and Italy at the Bernabéu in 2017 and Isco was absolutely unbelievable that night. I've just read that he won NINETEEN trophies when he was at Real Madrid.
Would be great to see him get back to somewhere near his best, he's a joy to watch on his game. Just five league goals in the last four-and-a-bit seasons.
Sevilla just two points clear of the drop zone
It's fair to say that Sevilla have not started the campaign as they would’ve wanted. Los Nervionenses have finished fourth for three consecutive seasons but found themselves in the relegation zone after a home defeat to Atlético Madrid at the start of October. Another loss at Estadio Román Sánchez-Pizjuán to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League cost Julen Lopetegui his job.
Sampaoli, who coached the club between 2016 and 2017, returned to the dugout and has steadied the ship somewhat, overseeing three 1-1 draws and a 1-0 victory in his four matches in charge, which have bumped Sevilla up the table a bit, although they're just two points above the bottom three heading into this game.
I suspect they'd be pretty pleased with another 1-1 draw tonight (or 1-0 win, obviously).
Carlo Ancelotti’s men have taken 28 points from a possible 30 this season and have won 13 of their 15 fixtures in all competitions, the other two ending all square. It'll be a tough ask for the visitors, although they'll be encouraged by the fact that the league leaders have conceded in each of their four home league fixtures so far this term.

With second-placed Barcelona not playing until tomorrow evening (against Athletic Club), Real Madrid have the chance to end the night six points clear at the top of LaLiga. This Madrid side are not the kind you want to be giving too much of a head-start...

Striker-less Sevilla
No surprises in the Real Madrid line-up given who's available.
It'll be interesting to see how Sevilla intend to line-up though, with no recognised striker in the team for a second away game in succession. The last one ended in a 1-0 win in Mallorca.
Dolberg, Rafa Mir and En-Nesyri are all on the bench. Each of them have started once since Sampaoli returned to the dugout. He's obviously not been massively impressed.

Of course, Benzema and Courtois have been in the news for other reasons this week. The Frenchman will have to wait to play his first game as a Ballon d'Or winner.

Good news for the hosts is the return of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after a back injury. Backup Andriy Lunin didn't do much wrong in the five matches he played but I can't see the Ukrainian getting more game any time soon...
Benzema's absence opens the door for Rodrygo to start up front. The Brazilian has been pretty hard done by in recent weeks, if you ask me. He's played really well this season (four goals and four assists in eight LaLiga games) and hasn't had much game time of late. A chance to impress.
Benzema out, then in, then out again
The big Real Madrid news has centred around captain Karim Benzema. He picked up a knock in training yesterday, which was first reported as being likely to keep him out. Then it was said he would be available (he was named in the matchday squad by Carlo Ancelotti). Finally, a fitness test this morning ruled him out. Nothing serious, they say, but Madrid aren't taking any chances.
