Real Madrid’s locker room crisis: Every breaking point under Arbeloa

A war of words with Kylian Mbappé is the latest in a series of issues Arbeloa has had to contend with at the Bernabéu.

Madrid. Update:

At Real Madrid, calm days no longer exist. No matter how hard the club tries to project normalcy, nobody inside Valdebebas truly believes things are normal anymore. The temperature inside the locker room has reached levels not seen in years. Back in January, it briefly looked like tensions were cooling down, but that turned out to be an illusion.

Player disputes. Squad members frozen out for non-soccer reasons. Relationships falling apart. The incidents have piled up to the point where dysfunction is no longer the exception. It is the norm.

The latest explosion came Thursday night, when Kylian Mbappé announced he would speak in the mixed zone after the match and effectively hit the red button.

What followed was a historic eruption, the latest blast in an increasingly volatile season.

I didn’t play because the coach told me I’m the fourth striker on the team,” Mbappé said. “I was ready to start, but it’s his decision.”

Then came the line that sent shockwaves through Madrid:

“I have to work to be better than Vini, Mastantuono, and Gonzalo.”

He repeated the statement twice.

But Mbappé was not finished.

After spending weeks under heavy criticism for his trip to Italy during a crucial stretch of the season, he shifted part of the blame onto the locker room itself.

“I wasn’t the only player who wasn’t in Madrid,” he said.

And finally, another pointed remark:

“I prefer speaking here. A lot of people don’t, and I have to read the media to know what they think.”

Arbeloa fires back

Across the hall, Álvaro Arbeloa was delivering his own news conference, and he wasted little time responding.

I never told him that,” Arbeloa said. “He must have misunderstood me. I wish I had four strikers.”

Then came the dagger:

“A player who four days ago wasn’t even fit enough to sit on the bench cannot suddenly be ready to start.”

The exchange felt less like a postgame media session and more like trench warfare. Reporters stood between two sides openly firing shots at each other.

And in reality, this was only the latest chapter in a saga that has been spiraling for months.

The moment everything changed

Inside the club, many trace the beginning of the fracture back to Oct. 26, during Xabi Alonso’s tenure, when Vinícius Júnior erupted after being substituted during El Clásico.

Some believe that was the moment the locker room first began to crack.

Whether or not that was the true breaking point, what followed is impossible to ignore.

On Feb. 11, just one day after a team bonding dinner meant to unify the squad, Antonio Rüdiger slapped teammate Carreras during an argument. The German defender reportedly believed some players were not taking the team’s struggles seriously enough, and tensions boiled over.

As the weeks passed, the atmosphere only became more unstable.

Dani Carvajal injured youngster Victor Valdepeñas with a heavy tackle during training. There was reportedly no intent to injure him, but teammates felt the challenge crossed the line for a regular session at Valdebebas. Many inside the club viewed it as another symptom of the growing agitation.

Then, in March, Raúl Asencio found himself repeatedly left out of the squad after confronting Arbeloa over his lack of playing time against Manchester City. Asencio believed he had earned minutes after making a major effort to be available for the trip to Celta Vigo.

He did not play again until apologizing to teammates.

More cracks behind the scenes

More recently, Trent Alexander-Arnold was benched for the derby after arriving late.

Then came the Dani Ceballos situation, one that directly contradicts Arbeloa’s public messaging.

“Whenever a Real Madrid player doesn’t play, it’s purely for sporting reasons,” Arbeloa insisted before El Clásico.

Inside the club, however, that version of events is disputed.

Ceballos has reportedly been excluded for non-soccer reasons following a heated argument with Arbeloa over his role in the team. Despite being fully fit, and despite Madrid’s lack of midfield depth in several matches, he has remained out of the squad.

“I bring the players I consider appropriate,” Arbeloa said coldly when questioned about it.

That relationship is now considered broken.

The same is true, to an extent, with Carvajal. The club captain has spent weeks away from the spotlight despite growing calls from fans to see him play more regularly.

“If you’ll allow me, I’m going to focus on what’s best for my team,” Arbeloa replied when pressed on the issue.

Fifteen words. That was all he offered regarding one of the club’s legends.

It did not go over well.

The fight that shocked Madrid

Then came the altercation between Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni, an incident that people around the club say will not be forgotten anytime soon.

There was a punch. A hard fall. A head wound. A wheelchair. Stitches.

Both players were reportedly fined €500,000 (over $580,000).

And amid all that chaos stood Mbappé.

The French superstar traveled to Italy while Madrid faced a massive stretch of games that could have forced the team into giving Barcelona a guard of honor at Camp Nou.

Then he pulled out of last Sunday’s Clásico after leaving training early the day before. Coincidence or not, he had been working with the reserve group at the time.

By Thursday, Mbappé reportedly felt fully fit and made that clear internally.

Arbeloa still left him on the bench.

That was the match that lit the fuse.

Mourinho looming in the background

At this point, the sparks have turned into a full-blown fire.

Inside Chamartín, there is growing acceptance of one uncomfortable truth: Arbeloa has lost control of the locker room.

And worse, the situation appears to be deteriorating by the week.

With only two weeks remaining in the season, the focus is no longer on repairing the present. The priority now is surviving it.

Attention has already shifted toward the future.

José Mourinho is increasingly viewed as a serious possibility, and within the club there is growing belief that Real Madrid’s next era requires a tougher, more authoritative manager.

Time will decide whether that proves to be the right call.

But one thing already feels undeniable.

The current captain of the ship has lost the wheel.

And Mbappé was simply the latest eruption from a locker room burning red hot.
