Real Madrid’s Militão, Rodrygo signed new contracts in July
Éder Militão and Rodrygo Goes, who were both out of contract at the Bernabéu in 2025, were handed new Real Madrid deals ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Vinícius Júnior wasn’t the only Real Madrid player who renewed his contract before the start of the season. The club also rewarded Éder Militão and Rodrygo Goes for their role in Los Blancos’ LaLiga and Champions League double by handing the Brazilians new deals at the beginning of July. While Vinícius has extended his contract until 2027, AS understands that Militão and Rodrygo have both penned agreements running until 2028.
Militão, Rodrygo no longer non-EU citizens
The pair this week secured Spanish citizenship, allowing Madrid to free up two of their permitted spots for non-EU players.
Militão and Rodrygo had both been on contracts scheduled to expire in 2025 - the deals they signed when they joined the 14-time European champions. Militão, who arrived from Porto in July 2019, is the most expensive defender in Madrid’s history, the club paying €50m to sign him from Porto. Their previous highest outlay was the €30m they spent on Pepe, Danilo, Álvaro Odriozola and Fábio Coentrão.

After overcoming the pressure of his high price tag, Militão established himself as a fixture in the Madrid backline shortly before long-serving club captain Sergio Ramos departed for Paris Saint-Germain in summer 2021. Currently, the 24-year-old is the seventh-most valuable Brazilian in men’s football, with specialist website Transfermarkt placing his market worth at €60m. He is also among the world’s 10 most valuable centre-backs.
Rodrygo, who also moved to the Bernabéu ahead of the 2019/20 season, was bought for €40m immediately after turning 18. Madrid’s purchase of the 21-year-old was a gamble which, like the signing of Vinícius, has paid off. At €65m, Rodrygo’s estimated worth now places him among the five most valuable Brazilians on the planet, alongside Vinícius (120m), Neymar and Antony (75m) and Marquinhos (70m).

With as many as seven players out of contract in 2023 - Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Nacho Fernández, Mariano Díaz, Marco Asensio and Dani Ceballos - Madrid now have plenty of work ahead of them. Of that septet, only Díaz is certain not to be given a new deal.
In view of Benzema, Modric and Kroos’ sterling service to the club, Madrid will allow the veteran trio to decide for themselves whether they want to remain at the Bernabéu next season. There has been speculation that Benzema’s Ballon d’Or win triggered an automatic contract renewal, but this is not the case; the Frenchman will have to sit down with the club and negotiate an extension.
