Referee choice a good omen for Tigres in Liga MX final
Experienced referee César Ramos has been appointed to the second leg of the Apertura 2025 championship series.
Two years later, Tigres are back in a Liga MX final, chasing the ninth championship in their history. Victory over Toluca would see Los Felinos draw level on Mexican titles with Cruz Azul, the league’s fourth-most-decorated club.
And as Tigres prepare for the Apertura 2025’s championship series, Guido Pizarro’s men can point to a positive omen: the identity of the second-leg referee.
The deciding game has been handed to the experienced César Arturo Ramos, who also officiated in Tigres’ last two Liga MX final wins.
Ramos the whistler for Tigres title triumphs in 2019, 2023
The first came in the Clausura 2019, when Tigres faced León. On that occasion, Ramos took charge of the second leg, which ended in a scoreless draw. Since the Monterrey club had won the first leg thanks to an André-Pierre Gignac strike, they secured their seventh star.
Fast forward to the Clausura 2023, and Tigres once again found themselves in the final, this time against Chivas Guadalajara.
In the second leg, again overseen by Ramos, Tigres were on the brink of losing the crown - but staged a dramatic comeback. Goals from Gignac, Sebastián Córdova and Pizarro enabled Los Auriazules to clinch their eighth title.
Now, in the Apertura 2025 final’s return leg - held on Sunday, Dec. 14, at Toluca’s Estadio Nemesio Diez, Ramos will once more be the man with the whistle.
It’s worth noting that this is a historic matchup - yet these two sides have never before met in a league title series.
