One of the best players in the Liga MX Apertura 2022 tournament was the defender Israel Reyes, who performed outstandingly for Puebla. In the wake of his sterling campaign, the Mexico international was snapped up by Club América ahead of the Clausura 2023, which will begin in early January.

Speaking after featuring in América’s friendly win over Cancún FC on Sunday, Reyes said that he cannot wait to make his league debut for the 13-time Mexican champions. The 22-year-old added that he will do everything in his power to earn the trust of head coach Fernando Ortiz.

Reyes learning from new América team-mates

I’m very happy to be a part of this team and to be doing my bit as we get ready for the start of the tournament,” Reyes said. “It’s been an intense preseason and the team started the game very well. On an individual level, it’s clear what the gaffer wants from me going into the tournament.

“When you play with guys like Bruno [Valdés], Jorge [Mere] and Sebastián [Cáceres], they’re lads who have a lot of experience and maturity,” Reyes added. “They’re seasoned campaigners and I’ve got so much out of working with them this preseason.”

In their first warm-up fixture of the preseason period, América saw off Cancún 2-0 at the Estadio Andrés Quintana Roo, thanks to goals by Diego Valdés and Jonathan Rodríguez.
