Just 31 official appearances in the first team, five goals and six assists. Cristiano Ronaldo’s previous stint at Sporting CP doesn’t have big numbers like every other team he has played for. The Madeira native is the best player to come out of the club’s youth academy and ever since that friendly against Manchester United that led to his move to Old Trafford, the Lisbon giants have been longing for his return.

The Portuguese spent time at Old Trafford, had the best spell of his career at Real Madrid, went on to win at Juventus and is now trying to take United back to their previous heights. But what about Sporting? His entourage have always expressed their affection for the club.

Chance of Ronaldo returning to Sporting

On previous occasions, the star’s mother, Dolores Aveiro, spoke about the possible return of Ronaldo to the Lisbon outfit. This time, she put it off again. “It could happen, but not now. It wasn’t this year, it could happen next year. This year or next year he appears, God willing,” she said.

Aveiro admitted that if it is not Cristiano who returns to Portugal, it could be his son, Cristiano Jr, who has already played as a striker in the youth teams of the various teams his father has played for. “If Ronaldo doesn’t come, it will be his son, Cristianinho,” she said of Cristiano’s eldest son, who is now 12 years old.

In search of a successor to Cristiano, Dolores Aveiro once again took spoke about her eldest grandchild. “He already has a successor in Cristianinho. If the wishes of a mother and grandmother are fulfilled, the near future of one of his sons will be at Sporting,” she added.

Ronaldo to continue playing

She also pointed out that they expect the veteran forward, as he himself stated at the Portuguese Federation’s awards gala, to continue playing until he is 40. “He has the will to continue playing until he is 40,” she continued.

This season has been one of the most difficult in terms of goals for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese has scored just once for Manchester United in all competitions. The Madeira native is still chasing his best form ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.
