Manchester United suffered a 6-3 defeat to Manchester City in the Manchester derby on Sunday as Cristiano Ronaldo watched on from the Etihad dugout. In the press conference afterward, United boss Erik ten Hag said he did not introduce the Portuguese forward out of respect for his great career.

The Dutch manager’s decision has not gone unnoticed and United legend Roy Keane had his say on Sky Sports. “Manchester United should have let Cristiano Ronaldo leave the club in the summer. They are disrespecting him.

“If you look at his goalscoring record, he has as much chance as any player to put the ball in the back of the net. He’s one of the greatest players of all time and if he’s sitting week in, week out on the bench at Manchester United, it’s not good,” the former club captain said.

Ronaldo’s options

Keane also spoke about the possible departure of the Portuguese player during the summer transfer window. “They should have let him go when the opportunity came up. He had options, I know that for a fact, and holding on to him to sit on the bench I think is ridiculous for a player of his stature.”
