Following Gabriel Caballero’s departure from Mazatlán, the Cañoneros are looking for a new coach and it looks like Rubén Omar Romano will be chosen to take the reins, a move which would mark his return to Mexican soccer after leading Atlas in 2018.

According to reports published by Mediotiempo, talks are at an advanced stage and the 64-year-old is close to agreeing terms. It is expected that in the next few hours a formal agreement will be signed and Romano’s arrival at Mazatlán will be made official.

Romano’s appointment could be announced this weekend. He will start a new challenge - his first task will be getting the team out of their precarious position. Mazatlán are currently bottom of the table with four defeats from the the first four games in the Clausura 2023.

That might not be a straightforward challenge for Romano, who has been out of coaching since 2018 when he was in charge of Atlas. He returns to football after five years of inactivity in management.

However, on the positive side, Rubén Omar Romano is a DT with extensive experience in soccer, especially in Mexico, where he has spent his entire career coaching teams such as Atlético Celaya, Tecos, Morelia, Pachuca, Cruz Azul, Atlas , America, Santos Laguna, Puebla and Tijuana.
