Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham AFC ties Sheffield United 3-3!
Ryan Reynolds is overjoyed as his team tying Sheffield United to keep the hope alive of advancing to the next round of the FA Cup.
Wrexham AFC has been off-field dynamic thanks to its celebrity ownership and successful TV program. But, at this time, it’s causing a stir on the surface.
Of the 32 teams still competing in the FA Cup, only Wrexham plays in a lower division. The National League is Wrexham’s home turf. It is the fifth division of English football and the first outside of the English Football League.
Wrexham 3 - 3 Sheffield United
The game played at the Racecourse Ground saw the team owned by Ryan Reynolds beat Sheffield United in a very entertaining match. James Jones and Thomas O’Connor scored the first two for Wrexham, while Oli McBurnie and Daniel Jebbison scored the tying goals for the visiting team.
Wrexham thought they had won it the 86th minute via Mullin on a pretty play by the Red Dragons, but Jon Eagan tied in the 94th and keeping the hope alive for the replay to be played later this week.
Sheffield had been playing with ten players after Daniel Jebbinson saw a red card in the 71 minute.
A world stun by an almost amateur team
It’s not the first time the Welsh minnows have caused waves in the FA Cup; in 1992, Wrexham stunned then-champions Arsenal 2-1 in one of the most famous “giant killings” in the tournament’s history.
Since then, Wrexham has fallen on bad times, but the acquisition by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has sparked a revival.
The October match between Wrexham and Blyth in the fourth round of FA Cup qualifying was broadcasted by ESPN2, the first time the international network has shown a match at that level on one of its linear channels.
Wrexham received £105,000 (about $130,000) for their third-round proper win. After their win against Sheffield United, if they do so, they’ll take home £120,000 ($149,000), and if they make it all the way to the FA Cup Final, they’ll take home £2 million ($2.48M).
