San Siro to be demolished: Inter and Milan agree to sell the stadium
After a long summit that lasted until late into the night, the Milan City Council approved the resolution providing for the sale of the Meazza Stadium to Inter and AC Milan.

In a dramatic overnight session that stretched nearly 12 hours, Milan’s City Council voted early this morning to approve the sale of the iconic San Siro Stadium—officially known as Stadio Giuseppe Meazza—to Inter Milan and AC Milan. The two clubs submitted a joint bid of €197 million (approximately $208 million), with a deadline to finalize the deal by September 30.
The resolution passed at around 10:00 PM EST with a narrow margin: 24 votes in favor, 20 against. The decision marks a historic turning point for the century-old stadium, which first opened its doors in 1926.
Milan’s legendary San Siro stadium is preparing to make way for a cutting-edge venue designed to meet modern European standards, with a target completion date of 2031—just in time for Euro 2032, which will be co-hosted by Italy and Turkey.
Once the sale resolution is approved, developers will have 40 days to finalize the ownership transfer, which must be completed by November 10. If the deadline is missed, a cultural heritage restriction will kick in, protecting the Meazza’s second tier from demolition.
AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano are pleased with the City Council's approval of the sale of the San Siro and its surrounding area: a historic and decisive step for the future of the Clubs and the City.

San Siro construction to begin in 2027
The ambitious project will be led by world-renowned architects Lord Norman Foster and David Manica. The new stadium—set to house both Inter Milan and AC Milan—will rise on the current parking lot adjacent to San Siro. This strategic location allows both clubs to continue playing at the historic venue until construction begins in 2027.
Plans call for demolishing 90% of the existing stadium and replacing it with a sleek, 71,500-seat arena featuring two expansive tiers designed for optimal sightlines and full ADA accessibility.
According to insider reports, the surrounding area will be transformed into a vibrant sports and entertainment district, complete with hotels, retail shops, restaurants, parking facilities, and a dedicated museum for each team.
