Santos goalkeeping coach says Carlos Acevedo should go to Qatar
Nicolás Navarro believes the Santos Laguno goalkeeper is in better form than Ochoa, Talavera and Cota.
You cannot please everyone and there will always be someone who is left unhappy with the squad called up for the World Cup - mainly fans who feel their players have been overlooked. That’s the view of Santos Laguno’s goalkeeping coach Nicolás Navarro who was one of those who have voiced their displeasure at Carlos Acevedo’s omission - even though Gerardo Martino has yet to announce his official list.
“Carlitos is the one who is in the best form at the moment - better than Memo Ochoa, better than Alfredo Talavera and better than Rodolfo Cota, and that has been the case for quite a while. So, it’s not always the best who go [to the World Cup”, Navarro said.
Although the official squad will be announced on Monday, everything indicates that Martino will take the goalkeepers mentioned by Nicolás Navarro to the World Cup. However, the coach also said that the 26-year-old goalkeeper is taking the situation calmly and is already thinking about the next World Cup, which will be hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico in 2026. He added that being left out of the squad for 2022 Qatar could “make him stronger” for the future.
