Schlotterbeck and the pro-Madrid clause
Dortmund is close to renewing his contract after months of negotiations. On the table are a significant pay raise and a long-term agreement.

Nico Schlotterbeck is on the brink of signing a new contract with Borussia Dortmund. After months of tentative talks, the agreement is finally within reach, bringing an end to a saga that at times threatened to spiral into something more dramatic – but ultimately never did. The deal is all but complete: a significant salary increase (around $15 million annually) and a shared understanding about the future. Both sides have also reached a verbal agreement to remain aligned should a transfer opportunity arise down the line – a scenario neither party is ruling out. Dortmund are known to cash in when the time is right, and Schlotterbeck is not closing any doors either. Not in the medium term. But in the short term, he is expected to stay.
The defender arrived in 2022 for $22 million and is now valued at roughly $60 million. He has emerged as one of the standout performers in the Bundesliga. Dortmund were determined not to lose him for free – but also not at any cost. With his contract set to run through 2027, this summer loomed as a decisive moment: renew or sell. Renewal was always the priority, and the club pushed hard to make it happen – and now it has.

Strong interest from Europe’s elite
For months, interest in Schlotterbeck has been constant. In addition to Real Madrid, several of Europe’s top clubs have inquired about his situation. He has been one of the most sought-after defenders on the market, which only heightened Dortmund’s concern as the weeks passed without a new deal. Now, however, the agreement is virtually done, and the extension will reportedly include a release clause designed to facilitate a future exit. A figure that interested clubs – including Madrid – would be aware of, should they wish to keep him on their radar.

Undisputed starter and key figure
In the short term, though, Schlotterbeck looks set to remain in Dortmund. He is the sixth-most-used player in the squad this season, logging 2,660 minutes. He has started 29 of the team’s 40 games so far. Of his 11 absences, nine were due to injury, one to suspension, and just one for rest. In other words, when he is available, he plays – a clear-cut automatic starter.
Highly valued on the market, Schlotterbeck is expected to finalize his renewal with Dortmund soon. Barring an unexpected twist, he will remain at Signal Iduna Park, where the club continues to follow a proven formula: develop and sell high – or sign and sell for more. Maximizing the value of players who grow within the squad remains central to Dortmund’s model. Even if he signs a five-year deal, it does not necessarily mean he will stay for all five. Carpe diem. But for now, everything points to him staying put.
