Senegal vs. Netherlands preview

Senegal were slight favorites to grab a ticket to the knockout stages, but the African squad suffered a major blow before the World Cup even begun, with Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mané ruled out of the tournament due to a fibula injury. Even if the team can’t call upon the services of the Bayern Munich forward, who scored two winning penalties against Egypt to seal Senegal’s first-ever Africa Cup of Nations triumph, the team will try to make things complicated for the Netherlands, tipped to take the top position of the group. Aliou Cissé’s men have proven to be a tough team, as they have recorded six clean sheets in their last eight competitive matches. Meanwhile, the Netherlands go into the match with some confidence after reaching the UEFA Nations League finals for the second time in three campaigns.

Louis Van Gaal’s team, regarded as one of the most dangerous in the tournament, will not only want to get to the round of 16, but go all the way after having lost the three World Cup finals they played in 1974, 1978, and 2010. The Netherlands, who missed out on qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, will try to get a victory that would certainly taste twice as good since Senegal together with Ecuador are likely the teams to fight for the second ticket to the knockout rounds.

Senegal

As previously mentioned, Mané has withdrawn from the Senegal squad as a result of his injury, which will require surgery, however, head coach Aliou Cisse has some options to cover the left flank with the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Iliman Ndiaye, Krepin Diatta and Bamba Dieng. Indeed, the Senegalese coach could choose Diatta, as Abdou Diallo is still doubtful ahead of what will be his country’s first match at the World Cup with a knee problem.

Netherlands

The Netherlands are not without their own issues up front, as Memphis Depay won’t be in the starting XI after recovering from a hamstring injury, although Van Gaal admitted he could feature as a substitute. Depay, who scored 12 goals during World Cup qualifying, was out of action for almost two months but recently returned to training and it must be said, he looked fit. There’s also Denzel Dumfries, who could be ready after being forced off during Inter Milan’s Serie A fixture against Atalanta last week, with Marten de Roon unlikely to be available with a back issue.

Senegal vs. Netherlands prediction

The Netherlands are the favorites to emerge victorious in this match, having won 11 of their past 14 matches at the World Cup, penalty shootouts excluded, with their most recent group-stage loss coming in 1994 against Belgium. On the other hand, it must be said that Senegal are tricky opponents and won’t make things easy for Frenkie de Jong, Steven Bergwin and co., having proved their defense is rock solid. With that said, the European side, hasn’t lost since June 2021 with a run of 15 matches unbeaten will likely be too much for Senegal.

Prediction: Senegal 1-2 Netherlands
