Monterrey, Nuevo León Update:

Sergio Canales has quickly become one of Monterrey’s biggest stars. Since arriving at Rayados, he’s elevated the team’s play, won over the fanbase, and even earned the captain’s armband. And when it comes to the Clásico Regio—the fierce rivalry between Monterrey and Tigres—Canales has already delivered in the moments that matter most.

His very first start for Rayados came in a rivalry match during the Leagues Cup, where he scored the late game‑winning penalty. Since then, he’s continued to shine on the biggest stage.

A Rising Clásico Scorer

Canales has racked up four goals and two assists against Tigres since joining Monterrey. That tally already places him among the club’s most productive players in Clásico history. He’s now tied for third all‑time with several former Rayados standouts—Sergio Verdirame, Rubén Romeo Corbo, Francisco Solís, Alexandro Fernandes, and Aldo De Nigris—each with four goals.

But Canales is the only active player in that group, and he’s just one goal away from joining an even more exclusive tier. With five goals, he would tie Guillermo Franco and his current coach, Nicolás Sánchez, as the club’s second‑highest scorers in Clásico Regio history.

The top spot, however, remains far out of reach. Mario de Souza Mota—better known as “Bahía”scored an incredible 11 goals against Tigres. He held the overall Clásico scoring record for years until André‑Pierre Gignac eventually surpassed him.

Key to Rayados’ Attack in the Clausura 2026

Canales enters the 2026 Clausura as Monterrey’s leading scorer with three goals, tied with Luca Orellano, who has also stepped up in the attack. Both players will be crucial for Rayados heading into the 141st edition of the Clásico Regio, where every touch, every chance, and every moment can define a season.
