Sergio Canales upbeat after operation

Sergio Canales reappeared on social media this weekend to send a positive message about his injury after undergoing surgery. “I love challenges, difficulties. I always came back stronger… and this time will be no different,” the Spanish midfielder vowed.

His brief message was accompanied by a photograph of himself smiling and resting in a bed in the hospital in Los Angeles, California where he was operated on.

After the operation, Monterrey gave an update on the player’s health in a press release, informing that the op had gone well. “Sergio Canales underwent successful surgery this Friday, October 6 in Los Angeles, California, to repair the myotendinous injury to the rectus femoris of his left quadriceps. Sergio’s reinstatement will be subject to his evolution and the medical assessment of specialists” the Albiazules statement read.

Based on the information given by the Cerro de la Silla club, a return date remains a mystery, although it is practically taken as read that he will not play in the remainder of 2023. The playoffs will begin in late November will the final pencilled in for 14 or 27 December (first leg) and 17 or 30 December (return leg). It means that Sergio will play no further part in the Apertura 2023.

Monterrey coach, Fernando Ortiz maintains that he has a large enough squad to replace anyone who falls injured. “We’ll at the end of the championship,” he explained. “There is a possibility of pushing someone from midfield into that position but we don’t have anyone who is a natural, attacking midfielder”.
