ART

Sergio Ramos’ impressive fine art collection

The PSG footballer has been buying works of art for more than five years and has an expensive collection by highly prestigious artists.

Update:
Sergio Ramos’ impressive fine art collection

Sergio Ramos and Pilar Rubio are passionate about art. On social media the couple often brag about their visits to different museums, although it has provoked some ridicule on more than one occasion - such as their visit to the Dalí Museum in Paris earlier this week. However, in recent years we have been able to verify that the Paris Saint-Germain defender is something of an aesthete and a very keen collector. His goal is for it to become “one of the most important collections in Spain and the world”.

In 2019, Ramos showed one of its first notable acquisitions: Lineage of Continuum, an urban work by New Yorker Phil Frost that according to experts is valued at 40,000 euros. Ramos felt that he identified with the “work and personality” of the artist and posed next to the work on social networks, where he also showed his gratitude to Fer Francés, who is jointly in charge of a gallery with Javier López and who advises the PSG star on many issues of relating to the art world.

According to culture portal Vanitatis, Sergio and Fer Francés met in 2018 after being introduced by designer María Escoté and Alberto Alarcón, creative director of Nobel Donkey. The adviser confessed that Ramos does not usually opt for world solely by one artist, but in his house he has several works by the Seville-born artist Manuel León Moreno. In 2018, Ramos defined him as a “good friend” and “one of the most talented artists with the most projection” when he visited him in his studio. He bought the painting, The blind lead the blind and six or seven others paintings, the painter confessed to Vanity Fair. However, Ramos also counts on the advice of the Marlborough Gallery and another expert in classical painting.

Banksy, Manolo Genovés and Alex Katz chez Ramos

Thanks to the Amazon Prime Video documentary about Ramos, we were able to get a peak inside his house and see how extensive his art collection is. As published at the time by the portal LOC, the footballer has a Manolo Valdés, one of the most renown Valencian artists on the international market whose works fetch from 30,000 to 300,000 euros; a painting by Juan Genovés, noted for its expressionist realism; two pieces by Alex Katz, figurative painter and sculptor; a sculpture by Jaume Plensa, which is one of the jewels in his collection with works valued at between 200,000 and 500,000 euros; and his Banksy, which he was looking to acquire for a long time.

He also owns four works by Belin, including a post-neocubist Gioconda and another over three metres wide, and recently acquired two from the prestigious Kenny Scharf, whom he defined as “the best ever”. Sergio Ramos has visited the author’s studio in person on countless occasions and took a painting with him, so it can be assumed that he did the same on other visits with artists such as Peter Halley, Erik Parker, Kaws and Francesco Clemente.

Tattoo art

Sergio Ramos’ passion for art is not restricted to paintings and sculptures - the footballer has adorned his skin with different works of great prestige. This same week he showed a tattoo on his abdomen of Salvador Dalí's Woman with drawers, which features the famous elephants that the genius used in many of his works. He also has a tattoo of Banksy’s Flower Thrower on his left leg.
