Newcastle United recorded an 8-0 victory over lowly Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Sunday evening. The last time the Magpies had won by the same margin in the Premier League was when they beat United’s cross-city rivals Sheffield Wednesday by the same scoreline on a day when Alan Shearer found the back of the net five times.

With the help of some sublime crossing from captain Kieran Trippier, Newcastle led 3-0 at the break. Paul Heckingbottom’s side had a mountain to climb in the second half. Eddie Howe’s men had previously dismantled Aston Villa (5-1) earlier this season and ran riot in the second half, scoring another five goals to make it eight in front of the ecstatic away fans, who made the trip to the Steel City.

Five things from Newcastle’s 8-0 win

  • For the first time in Premier League history, eight different players from the same team scored in the same match (Longstaff, Burn, Botman, Wilson, Gordon, Almiron, Guimaraes and Isak).
  • Newcastle had not scored 8+ goals in a Premier League match since 19 September 1999 when they beat Sheffield Wednesday 8-0 (at home), with Alan Shearer scoring 5 goals.
  • Newcastle are the third team to score 8+ goals away from home in a game in the Premier League era, after Manchester United (1-8 vs Nottingham Forest in 1999 and Leicester City (0-9 vs Southampton in 2019).
  • Kieran Trippier is the fourth Newcastle player with 3 assists in a single Premier League game, after Andy Cole, Moussa Sissoko and Allan Saint-Maximin.
  • It was Sheffield United’s worst defeat in an English Premier League match.

Newcastle can take many positives from the result, but Howe will be aiming to keep his players grounded. The fact that he had eight different goalscorers shows that they don’t need to rely on a Shearer-type figure in the attacking department.

As for Sheffield United, it could be a long season for the newly-promoted side, who currently sit bottom of the Premier League table with just one point from their opening six games.
