Singer Shakira has confirmed the end of her relationship with Barcelona and former Spain footballer Gerard Piqué.

“We are sorry to confirm that we are separating”

In a statement released by her representatives and published by Spanish news agency EFE, the Colombian announced on Saturday that she and Piqué have decided to separate after over a decade together.

We are sorry to confirm that we are separating,” the statement reads. “For the well-being of our children, who are our top priority, we ask that our privacy be respected. Thank you for your understanding.”

Shakira and Piqué have two children: Milan, nine, and Sasha, seven.

The announcement comes amid reports in the Spanish media that Piqué, 35, has been unfaithful to Shakira, 45, and has moved out of the family home.

The pair began dating in 2010, having met in Madrid shortly before Piqué helped Spain to victory at that year’s World Cup in South Africa.

Shakira sang the official World Cup song, “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)”, performing before kick-off of Spain’s 1-0 final win over the Netherlands at Johannesburg’s Soccer City Stadium.

In a 2020 interview with the Catalan newspaper L’Esportiu, Piqué recalled his first meeting with Shakira. “I told her that I’d see her at the final,” he said. “She was going to perform in the closing ceremony and I was certain we’d make it that far.”
