Update:

Son Heung-min’s arrival at LAFC has already had a transformative impact both on and off the pitch, despite the 33-year-old having only played a few matches so far for his new team.

On the field the South Korean star made an immediate impact on his debut for the Black & Gold as he won a crucial penalty just 20 minutes after coming off the bench, helping LAFC secure a 2–2 draw against Chicago Fire.

In his first three games, he has already bagged one goal and added an assist, showcasing his attacking prowess and adaptability to MLS.

Off-field impact

LAFC’s announcement of Son’s signing generated five times more global engagement than any previous post, including that of Gareth Bale’s arrival.

His debut moment—winning a penalty—became MLS’s second-best performing social media post of 2025, with 26 million impressions.

His jersey sales have broken records, and LAFC games are now nearly sold out for the season with a new standing-room-only section was added and quickly sold out.

Via retail giant Fanatics, his No. 7 LAFC jersey has remained a bestseller through August, and he ranks only behind Lionel Messi in MLS shirt sales after a team switch. LAFC have sold out of the team’s black home jersey at the LAFC team store at BMO Stadium with the white away shirt set to follow suit.

‘Boy next door’

Son comes across as a positive person and this affable personality and has made him a beloved figure, not just among Koreans but across diverse fan communities.

Son has openly stated his goal is to “make MLS bigger”, recognizing the league’s potential and expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support he’s received.

The 33-year-old is now getting ready for his home debut as LAFC welcome San Diego to BMO Stadium this weekend.
