As it stands, things are not looking great for Germany at the Qatar 2022 World Cup. A shock defeat to Japan in their opening Group E fixture has immediately put them on the back foot ahead of the matchday two clash against Spain (2pm ET), who kicked off in imperious form against Costa Rica.

If the Japanese were to defeat Costa Rica in Sunday’s early fixture (5am ET), Hansi Flick’s side know that a defeat to the Spaniards will send them home before the knockout stages for a second World Cup in a row. Even a draw would be unlikely to be enough, given that Spain thrashed the Costa Ricans by seven goals, which means Die Mannschaft would have to defeat the Central Americans, hope Luis Enrique’s side lose to Japan and make up an eight-goal swing on matchday three. Stranger things have happened in football, of course, but it would be a big ask.

La Roja head into the clash full of confidence after passing Costa Rica to death in their opening group game, setting records along the way (the highest number of passes in the first half of a World Cup game, highest percentage share of possession in a World Cup match). Spain have often been criticized for the lack of a cutting edge to accompany their undoubted passing ability but everything clicked in the final third against Los Ticos, with six different players finding the net.

When Germany went in 1-0 up on Japan at half-time in their matchday one fixture, everything was looking rosy. They also posted impressive passing numbers in the first 45 minutes, while the mobility and footwork of Jamal Musiala caused the Japanese all manner of problems. However, some key substitutions by Japanese coach Hajime Moriyasu changed the game in the second half, in which the German defence looked vulnerable. Not ideal ahead of a clash with a team who’s just scored seven goals in a game…

Spain vs Germany: match odds

Spain are favorites to win Sunday’s clash, with a victory priced by most bookmakers at around +125 to +135.

A Germany win is priced at around +180 to +200, while the odds on a draw are around +250 to +265.

Spain vs Germany: prediction

Given that the two nations were clear favourites to qualify out of the group, not doing so would be an abject failure for either. Spain look to be in fine fettle after their opening match and will relish the opportunity to eliminate a team that was expected to be in contention at the business end of the tournament. Even if Japan don’t beat Costa Rica, Germany will not want to lose and leave their fate in the hands of others on matchday three. However, their recent record against Spain doesn’t make for great reading, with the Spaniards having defeated the four-time winners on the way to lifting the 2008 European Champions and the World Cup trophy itself in 2010. Additionally, the last meeting between the sides ended in a 6-0 win for Spain in the Nations League in November 2020.

Prediction: Spain 1-0 Germany
