Spain’s referee committee believe official got two VAR decisions wrong in Real Madrid 3-2 Almería

The refereeing collective believe that Hernández Hernández judged two VAR reviews incorrectly in the game that saw Real Madrid stage a dramatic comeback.

The refereeing performance during the Real Madrid-Almería match continues to add pages to the story. As revealed by journalist Manu Carrreño on Spanish radio show, El Larguero, the Refereeing Committee in Spain (CTA) have acknowledged that Hernández Hernández, who was in charge of the VAR, was wrong with two of the three reviews that were key to the outcome of the match. The referees’ association consider that the referee was not right neither in awarding a penalty for Kaiky’s handball nor giving Vinicius’ goal.

In the first instance, which opened the scoring and set Real Madrid on the road to the comeback, the CTA believe that Hernández Hernández was wrong not to take into account everything that happened in the move. More specifically, they consider that he focused solely on Kaiky’s handball, but not on the possible fouls by Rüdiger and Joselu, as explained by the journalist.

CTA reveal their concern with VAR approach

The other error they see in the referee’s performance came with Vinicius’ goal, with which Ancelotti’s team drew level in the match. The CTA believes that Hernández Hernández should not have called the on-field referee, Hernández Maeso, to see the play at the screen, since in the images he was shown, it is not clear whether the ball hits the Brazilian’s arm or shoulder.

The game was a crazy affair, VAR (almost) aside, as bottom of the league Almería went 0-2 ahead at the home of the 35-time league winners. It took goals from Bellingham and Vini Jr with a late Dani Carvajal tap-in sealing all three points for Ancelotti’s side in another classic comeback in the Spanish capital.

When will Hernández Hernández referee his next game?

Hernández Hernández is in charge of the VAR in the Copa del Rey match between Atlético de Madrid and Sevilla to be played this Thursday. However, Carreño has stated that this opinion of the CTA will not lead to the replacement of the referee.

The information was made known the same day in which the Technical Committee of Referees have filed an official police report regarding the leak of audios of the match, and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have done the same with Almería’s Gonzalo Melero, who accused the referees of stealing. What’s for certain is that this is not the end of the story that continues to shock and astonish.
