‘Spygate’ team expelled from $260M final for spying offenses
Southampton have been stripped of their place in the Championship playoff final. Beaten semi-finalists Middlesbrough take their place.
Southampton have been expelled from the Championship playoffs for their role in the ‘spygate’ scandal that has shocked English soccer in recent weeks.
A verdict from the English Football League, the governing body for the lower leagues, has acted swiftly to remove Southampton from the upcoming playoff final and reinstate beaten semi-finalists Middlesbrough in their place. Middlesbrough will now take on Hull City for a place in the Premier League on Saturday May 23.
A member of staff working for Southampton was found to have spied on a Middlesbrough team practice session in the build-up to the game. A statement from the EFL revealed that Southampton had “admitted to multiple breaches of EFL Regulations related to the unauthorised filming of other clubs’ training”.
Southampton have been hit with a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 season and removed from this year’s playoff final. Had they beaten Hull in the final, Southampton would have returned to the Premier League and benefitted from a financial windfall of roughly £200 million ($286M).
What is the spygate scandal?
The scandal first emerged on May 7 when Middlesbrough launched a formal complaint to the EFL, alleging that a member of the Southampton staff had spied on a training session three days before the semi-final first leg. Both legs of the semi-final were played out while the EFL investigated the incident, but photos of the ‘spy’ were circulated in the media.
Southampton beat Middlesbrough over the two legs to book their place in the final but the EFL issued a public statement saying that there could still be a change if Southampton were found guilty of spying. Middlesbrough released a statement saying: “In these circumstances, the only appropriate response is a sporting sanction which would prevent Southampton FC from participating in the EFL Championship play-off final.”
Middlesbrough have got their wish and they are now 90 minutes away from a stunning return to the top flight of English soccer.
