Suárez, Marcelo, Isco...The 47 LaLiga players out of contract from 1 July
As we reach the end of June 2022, we reflect on the players of top flight Spanish clubs who are available for a free transfer come the start of July.
Tomorrow, the first day of July 2022, LaLiga Santander will hang in their shop window that poster that provides so much excitement for any consumer: ‘free goods’. At 12 midnight tonight, the deadline to renew those who have finished their contracts at the end of the 2021-22 season passes.
Which LaLiga players are free agents?
June 30 is that date that every sports journalist writes and mentions a thousand times during the season when referring to a footballer’s contract, but it seems almost meaningless until the time really comes. And now that that time has indeed come, many top flight players are free meaning they can take their pick of other clubs at zero upfront cost between their new and old employers. As it stands, and unless no late agreement is made to extend, there are exactly 47 players in LaLiga with that decision.
Some of these could prove to be real bargains. For example, you could snap up for nothing the player who has won the most titles with Real Madrid, 25, including five European Cups (Marcelo), or maybe his teammate, an international with 19 titles at Madrid (Isco). Then there’s a 2018 World Cup champion and the third most expensive footballer in history after Neymar and Mbappé (Dembélé), or even Uruguay’s all-time top scorer (Luis Suárez).
There are also some legendary names, such as Joaquín from Betis, the club leaving the task of renewal until the last day, perhaps because they take the agreement for granted and because in that relationship there is no room for infidelity. Some of those in the table below may end up renewing, but most will not, either because they didn’t want to or because it was the club that left the exit door open for them.

Not everything is black and white and there are some tricky situations. For example, the case of Pere Milla, an Elche footballer who is negotiating with other clubs because he understands that his contract expires today, but the club from Elche interprets that the player has renewed automatically upon fulfillment of one of the clauses of the contract. Others, such as Fran Mérida, Juncá, Víctor Sánchez and Oier have an optional year that their clubs can exercise, but have not yet done so.
