Suárez signs for Inter Miami: how long is the striker’s contract in MLS?
Veteran striker Luis Suárez, 36, has become the fourth former Barcelona star this year to join MLS franchise Inter Miami.
Inter Miami have confirmed the signing of ex-Barcelona striker Luis Suárez, with the Uruguayan joining the Florida club on a contract running until the end of the 2024 Major League Soccer season.
Suárez moves to MLS as a free agent after leaving Brazilian club Grêmio, where the 36-year-old scored 26 goals in 53 games during a 12-month stay. He will team up with former Barça clubmates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba at DRV PNK Stadium.
Miami chief Beckham “delighted” at Suárez capture
“We are delighted to have a player of Luis’ quality and passion for the game join our club,” Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham said. “He joins a squad that is inspiring the next generation and we look forward to seeing him take to the field with both former teammates and young players from our academy.”
Suárez said: “I’m very happy and excited to take on this new challenge with Inter Miami. I can’t wait to get started, and I’m ready to work to make the dream of winning more titles with this great club a reality. I’m optimistic about what we can achieve together with our shared ambition.
“I will give my all to bring joy to these great fans I’ve heard so much about while I wear Inter Miami colours, and look forward to reuniting with great friends and players. I’m also eager to meet my new teammates and coaches.”
Suárez’s career stats and achievements
In 768 club appearances for Club Nacional, Ajax, Liverpool, Barça, Atlético Madrid and Grêmio, Suárez has scored 471 career goals. His club honours include five LaLiga titles, a Champions League and a Club World Cup. He has also won the European Golden Shoe twice, in 2013/14 and 2015/16.
At international level, he has scored 68 goals in 138 Uruguay caps, and helped his country to victory at the 2011 Copa América.
When do Inter Miami kick off 2024 MLS season?
Inter Miami’s MLS campaign begins on 21 February 2024, when Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino’s men host Real Salt Lake in the regular season’s curtain-raiser.
Before then, the Herons have organised six preseason friendlies, which include a clash against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia on 1 February.
