Talks break down between Jesse Marsch and Southampton

Former Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch is unlikely to be named the new Southampton boss after talks broke down on Wednesday.

The Telegraph report that the issue between the sides in the negotiation is in relation to the length of the contract Marsch would have had at the Premier League strugglers.

Jeremy Wilson of The Telegraph wrote on Twitter: “Talks between Southampton and Jesse Marsch have broken down. Club not keen on a long-term contract given current situation. Ruben Selles to take Chelsea game and club still see him as a viable longer-term option, potentially with a more experienced coach”.

Sacked by Leeds

The Saints, who are currently bottom of the Premier League, are against offering the American coach a long-term deal owing to their poor position in the league.

The club were especially against the deal after the financial hit that they had just taken over the sacking of Nathan Jones, who was relieved of his duties on Sunday.

Jones cost £4million in compensation to his former club Luton Town, and will be due compensation himself for the remaining years of his contract that was due to last at St Mary’s until 2026.

Marsch was sacked by Leeds earlier this month after just eleven months in charge at Elland Road.
