Tecatito, the solution Javier Aguirre doesn’t want to see
The numbers don’t lie - however, they don’t seem to be enough for Aguirre to give Corona a second chance with Mexico.

The countdown is officially on. With less than eight months to go before the 2026 World Cup kicks off, Mexico still doesn’t have a clear, reliable lineup it can trust across the field.
Between injuries, limited playing time, and inconsistent performances, Javier Aguirre’s squad has raised more questions than answers. The positions that need reinforcement aren’t a mystery—but to “El Vasco,” sticking with what he already knows seems to be the safest bet.
Based on the coach’s most recent call‑ups, Alexis Vega, Diego Lainez, Roberto Alvarado, and César Huerta are the players expected to battle for the winger spots. But here’s the real question: have any of them produced enough to lock down a place? For most, even delivering a quality cross has been a recurring criticism. Which is why overlooking the best crosser in all of Mexican soccer isn’t just surprising—it’s a clear mistake.

Tecatito Corona and a comeback that keeps slipping away
Back in 2022, Jesús “Tecatito” Corona suffered an injury that ruled him out of the World Cup. It was a crushing blow. He was entering the prime of his career, and much like the situation with Carlos Vela, Mexico lost its most naturally gifted player right before the sport’s biggest stage. A 2026 redemption arc seemed entirely possible—yet Aguirre hasn’t called on him once.
What makes this even more puzzling is that, according to Statiskicks, Corona leads all Mexican players in accurate crosses in 2025, despite playing just over half the available minutes. Leaving that kind of production off the roster—while not necessarily fatal—is still a glaring oversight.

And then there’s his performance at the Club World Cup, where he delivered one of his best stretches in years against teams like Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund, and River Plate. At this point, having Tecatito in the squad may no longer be a luxury—but he’s certainly not expendable either, even with his age and injury history.
