Ten Hag relegates Varane to the subs’ bench
Ten Hag has tried out his first starting XI with Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez at the back. As AS has learned, Varane starts as the third central defender.
Raphaël Varane will need to prove himself this season, under new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. Diario AS undertands that the French defender isn’t a first choice for the Dutch coach, who has elected Lisandro Martínez and Harry Maguire as his starters in defence for the team’s Premier League opener this weekend.
United’s season begins on Sunday at home to Brighton and the Dutch coach has already settled on his line-up against the Seagulls. In fact, he has been working with the same XI since Tuesday. A line-up which doesn’t include Varane. Instead, summer signing Lisandro will partner Maguire in central defence.
The Argentine centre-back cost United 64 million euros including variables, and was expressly requested by Ten Hag, who coached the player when both were at Ajax. Lisandro will occupy the left side position in United’s defence. He seems to have convinced the coach even though he played just one game during the pre-season - the friendly against Rayo Vallecano at the end of last month
