Manchester City’s quite incredible slump in form continued on Saturday (December 21) as Pep Guardiola’s side fell to yet another defeat, this time losing 2-1 away to Aston Villa.

City have dominated the Premier League in recent years, winning six of the last seven titles, including the last four in a row. However, their chances of extending that streak this season look to be increasingly slim, as they are now nine points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have two games in a hand.

Manchester City’s crisis in numbers

A quick look at the standings shows Guardiola’s team have been beaten in six of their opening 17 Premier League games, more than they have lost in seven of the last eight full Premier League seasons.

Overall, the Mancunians have won just one of their last 12 games in all competitions, nine of which have ended in defeat. A statistic that is especially damning considering what came before it.

As highlighted by OneFootball, City had suffered only eight defeats in the previous 106 (yes, one hundred and six) games, which highlights the drastic nature of their total collapse.

Their start to the 2024/25 season has made it even more shocking, as the Premier League holders had kicked off the campaign with a 13-game unbeaten run, suggesting they would once again be the team to beat in England and in Europe.
