The ‘Finalissima’ gets the green light: Spain to face Argentina in Doha
The match between the European and world champions will be played on March 27 in Doha, Qatar. Argentina’s final confirmation has cleared the way.

After months of negotiations and weeks of uncertainty due to Argentina’s internal turmoil, the highly anticipated clash between Spain and Argentina—the reigning champions of Europe and South America—has finally been set. The Finalissima will take place on March 27 in Doha, Qatar, kicking off at 2:00 p.m. ET.

Yamal versus Messi
Organizers UEFA and CONMEBOL, along with both countries’ respective football federations (Spain’s RFEF and Argentina’s AFA), confirmed the match as both a commercial and sporting spectacle. It will feature two of the world’s brightest stars: Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi.
The announcement had been delayed despite Spain’s qualification for the World Cup, largely due to Argentina’s financial disputes and internal struggles, including ongoing judicial investigations into the AFA. With those issues resolved, the showdown is now official.
In addition to the Finalissima, both teams will play friendlies in Doha during the same window: Spain will face Egypt, while Argentina will take on Qatar.

Why Doha?
The capital of Qatar, host of the 2022 World Cup, secured the event despite strong interest from other nations. Saudi Arabia was seriously considered, but ultimately Doha won out as the stage for this blockbuster Spain-Argentina matchup.

Second edition of the ‘Finalissima’
The Finalissima was introduced as part of UEFA and CONMEBOL’s growing partnership, designed to celebrate the best of European and South American soccer. Argentina won the inaugural edition in 2022, defeating Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium in London.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin emphasized the symbolic importance of the event: “This match represents the union of two footballing continents and showcases the global reach of our sport. We expect an unforgettable evening of elite soccer and international celebration.”
CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez added: “It’s a symbol of cooperation and respect between confederations, and a chance for fans to enjoy a truly historic occasion.”
