The good, the bad and the disappointing: Liga MX Apertura 2025

Six weeks into the Liga MX Apertura 2025, the first third of the tournament has already brought joy, frustration, and tears.

Among the teams leaving fans disappointed are Pumas, who under Efraín Juárez have struggled to find wins. They’ve managed just one victory, three draws, and two losses, scoring six goals and conceding eight. Keylor Navas has injected some life into the squad, but goals remain scarce. Guillermo “Memote” Martínez isn’t making an impact up front, Adalberto Carrasquilla lacks consistency, Piero Quispe hasn’t stood out, and Aaron Ramsey only just made his debut. With such results, the side from Pedregal sits 13th in the table.

The good

Monterrey lead the standings with 15 points and are gradually finding steady performances from key names such as Sergio Canales, Sergio Ramos, and the resurgence of Lucas Ocampos. Germán Berterame’s goals have earned him a call-up to Javier Aguirre’s Mexico squad for training camps, while Jesús Manuel “Tecatito” Corona has been sharp at home. Under coach Domènec Torrent, Monterrey top the table with 13 goals scored and seven conceded.

Cruz Azul, led by Nicolás Larcamón, remain unbeaten after six games, with four straight wins. Ángel Sepúlveda has been crucial in attack and the squad overall looks solid. Critics, however, still point to their embarrassing 7-0 loss to Seattle Sounders in the opening stage of the Leagues Cup.

Pachuca, managed by Jaime Lozano, started the Apertura in brilliant form with four consecutive wins before a loss and then a draw in León. Overall, the side has been strong and could continue to be a difficult opponent throughout the season. The team from the “Bella Airosa” boasts attacking options like Gastón Togni, Oussama Idrissi, and Alexei Domínguez.

Tigres have recorded three wins, one draw, and one loss under Guido Pizarro. They were beaten just hours ago by Robert Dante Siboldi’s Mazatlán, but Ángel Correa has shone early in the tournament. The 2022 World Cup winner has added quality to the squad from Nuevo León.

Toluca didn’t have their best outing this past Saturday, falling 1-0 to Cruz Azul in Mexico City. They’ve also played several games away from home, including in the Leagues Cup, and Paulinho was given rest against Cruz Azul due to the heavy workload. With Helinho sidelined through injury, coach Antonio Mohamed is still looking for the best version of the reigning Liga MX champions, who currently sit among the top six with 10 points.

Allan Saint-Maximin has made a flying start with Club América. The Frenchman helped the team thrash Atlas 4-2 away, lifting them to second place in the standings with 14 points, just behind Monterrey and above Cruz Azul. Under André Jardine, América are the league’s other unbeaten side with four wins and two draws.

The bad

Pumas are far from the only disappointment. Chivas have also struggled badly, sitting 16th in the table. Gabriel Milito’s team have just one win, one draw, and four losses for a total of four points – not the numbers expected from a club that impressed many analysts in preseason. For now, it’s been “all smoke, no fire” from the Rebaño Sagrado. They do, however, have a game in hand against Tigres.

Necaxa, under Fernando Gago, are another team floundering. The Argentine coach, forever tied to Boca Juniors, has managed just one win, two draws, and three defeats in his return to Mexican football after falling short back home.

The middle ground

León have lost steam. With Colombian star James Rodríguez dealing with muscle issues, the team hasn’t seen his best form. La Fiera sit ninth with seven points from two wins, one draw, and three defeats.

San Luis, Santos, and Mazatlán each have six points and will be pushing to improve in hopes of reaching either the Liguilla or at least the Play-In at the end of the season. Tijuana and FC Juárez also look like teams capable of giving headaches to bigger squads with deeper rosters.
